With Windows 10 release and free upgrade, many are scrambling to get their pcs upgraded to stay ahead whether needed or just wanting to stay ahead instead of being left in the dust. But with upgrading a PC comes the issues with upgrading that many are experiencing, and a once great company PC Magazine owned by [email protected] has taken years of trust and a great name and turned rogue. Dont get me wrong, Microsoft has new issues too which will be in another report.
A week ago I went to upgrade my PC, and my childrens pcs to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Several kept failing the upgrade and it was discovered that people with small SDD drives had an issue because they needed more space to do the upgrade. Now if your using home built PC, the easy option is to uninstall whats not needed then reinstall later. But with PCs already loaded from the retailer, thats not much of an option. What is, is a program that can move the porgrams off the boot SDD drive to a regular hard drive and change the settings in the registry to the new location. Thats where PCmag.com [email protected] comes in.
PCmag.com happens to be at the top of most websearches for what many need to do this, but what many dont know except about the big name is that they are using the Windows upgrade to scam many out of their money, even if it isnt much. Back in 2012, Pc Magazine [email protected] declared bankruptsy and what they are doing now may even attempt to use this to fall back on for those wanting their money back who wernt carefull enough to use credit cards that the bank can reverse the charges. I was lucky, and used a credit card which is now stopped and multiple charges reversed.
When I saw the article about WAM (Windows Application Mover) and what it can do, I was estatic. I read everything on their website and saw there were two options, Paying $7.97 for a single download, or $19.97 for unlimited. After looking at their long list of utilities, I decided to go with the one time download. I already had utilities that did everything else they were offering. I went through the entire application, selected the one time download, put my credit card info in and selected complete to finish the order. My phone then beeps which was a security feature I set up to let me know if and when a charge is done on my card, and I dont know what made me decide to look, but I did and was a bit angry to see I was not only charged $19.97, the link to log into the account turned up a page not found error. It seems PC Magazines server was fixed up enough to accept credit cards, but not enough to actually give anyone access. I checked the address where it was pointing to and discovered that either the address did not exist, or possible if it did, it was one of the many that got liquidated long ago. The phone numbers were either disconnected or the one that did work went to a voicemail box already full. I tried to log in and again got page not found. I tried different ways and either page not found or my account info was incorrect. Even lost password turns up page not found.
Then realizing what was possibly happening, I call my bank to find out that not only was my card charged once, but several times and that they were about to call me to see if the charges were legit. When I told them what was happening, they too tried and got the same responce. I then looked at the email sent me and saw the name Digital River (yes groan) the company noteriouse for multiple charges and worse. But to my suprise when my bank did a three way call, they ourtight stated they havent done business with them in over a year. That being said, my bank stops my card to prevent further charges, reverses the ones already made. I got an email today from PCmagazine 8/15/2015 trying again to make it look like They are Digital River. Ziff Davis must know their reputation very well to know to use someone elses name to take the blame for what they are doing.
Since we cant avertise, Ill just say this. There are two programs still available elsewhere to get this job done. One sells for $15, the other absolutely free. Dont make the mistake I did and try getting it from PCmag.com or your going to be spending a good part of the day trying to get your money back.
