This is an organization that certifies individual as being qualified to tutor bases solely on a test that the administer online. Their tutors often charge ridiculously low rates when compared to those of qualified tutors.
I am a college professor who teaches mathematics. I am going to express my optinion of why Wyzant is a new online service that causes great harm.
Parents of students often make the decision to hire a tutor based on the low rates they see on Wyzant as compared to those of qualified tutors. People tend to forget, when seeing the low rates that are offered, that they may be hiring someone who cannot help their student. By the time they discover their error, e.g. when a student is taking the SAT, it is too late and the student has been irreparably harmed. The parent will be angry, but the damage has been done. This is a company that has already harmed and will continue to harm students. Obviously the parent cannot sue the company but knows what has occurred.
First and foremost, they do not send the emails they say they sent. They either use wrong address or falsehoods. Applying as tutor. Well educated in the field, and written numberous books, taught classes, BUT was not a previous tutor. Well. Started to apply, and they wanted a detailed profile. Did not reply while working on profile, and found a good part time teaching job. In the mean time, they removed my name from the email, and stated that they had sent emails requesting profile, and since I did not reply, they removed my name, ...... forever......Their response is we sent it to an advisory board, ha., and they use their bias views to keep a good tutor off the listing. I am ashamed of this company and their customer services.
Wyzant makes it really difficult to understand how to get started as a new tutor. If you do not complete there convoluted process correctly within 3 tries, you will NOT be considered to be a tutor. Without explanation, they will just say, "Sorry you don't qualify", in so many words, without giving much of a reason. Don't waste your time plus they will take a large portion of what you make.
