Window World of Altoona Reviews

  • Nov 9, 2017

I made the costly mistake of hiring this company to replace windows and siding on my house. The job was, at best, a hack job. I contacted several contractors for quotes to repair the "work" but once they found out that Window World did the work, only one would even give me a quote. That quote is in excess of $30,000. The owner Chad Shirey is a beligerent jerk whose only concern is collecting more money. I have many pics available on my Facebook page and will be adding more soon. The pictures speak for themselves. Copy and paste or click the following link to see the page with the pictures of their work. facebook . com / Window-World-of-Altoona-Johnstown-and-State-College-is-a-rip-off-1209110375875954/?ref=bookmarks

If you have had work done by this company, have your house inspected by a competent inspector. Unfortunately, much of the damage will not be apparent for years when the damage is even more costly.

Below are most of the items listed in my complaint to BCP:

Flashing was not installed, required per IRC R703.8

Window wraps (aluminum) were not fabricated or installed in a manner that meets the intent of IRC. Wood is visible behind the aluminum in almost EVERY window sill. Several of the window sills are fashioned that water runs directly into structure underneath. All windows are likely to sustain water damage because of the substandard work if not corrected. Methods used were not industry standard, best practices, or per manufacturer’s instructions. Many sills are crooked and/or not squared off. Almost every window has exposed edges and are safety hazards.

Fascia is not installed properly and face nailed. The fascia on the front porch as well as the rear upper deck roof is falling off. They removed the face board on the front porch, did not replace it, only nailed the bottom of the fascia, and “glued” it together with caulk, not an approved adhesive. All workmanship is sub-standard, and many areas, especially the “bird boxes” have gaps large enough for bats to get behind. The birdbox on the NE corner of the house is falling apart. The fascia along the deck roof has never been completed.

Gutters and downspouts were not removed and replaced per contract. Removal and re-installation is necessary to get the fascia behind it. On the deck roof, the fascia does not even cover the whole face board.

Returns were not completely/properly removed per contract. In at least two cases, they cut them where it was convenient, leaving part of return remaining, wrapped it in aluminum and attached old house shingles on top of them. All are out of square, crooked, and look bad.

A continuous water resistant barrier was not installed behind siding per IRC

Siding is wavy and not level. Manufacturer’s instructions to properly prepare the surface were not followed. They installed fanfold insulation and siding directly over very old, curled shingles. Old shingles need to be removed or at minimum, the structure “furred” out.

Siding, J channels and other ancillaries have mfg. nailing requirements that were not followed. Siding and ancillaries were face nailed in many areas against Mfg. instructions. There are many areas where the J channel can be pulled away from the house several inches because of their lack of proper installation. When Shirey was told, his response was “It’s not falling off, is it?” That became his usual response when I pointed out issues with the work.

Fanfold insulation was not properly/completely installed. There is one area where light can be seen through the wall from inside the attic.

Because they did not do necessary surface preparation (per IRC and manufacturer's instructions) before performing their new work, it is not possible to do an acceptable job without stripping all the new work off, removing the old deteriorated surface, and performing the necessary preparation. The repair work will cost approximately 3 times the cost of the original contract because of the additional work required.
