Several months ago, we had a knock at the door. It was a salesman from Winder Farms. He was very friendly, so we invited him inside to give us his sales pitch. He went on and on about how amazing their food was, and how we could receive top quality, local fresh dairy and produce for the same price as the grocery store without the bother of having to drive anywhere, how it would improve the health of our family, yadda yadda yadda. He gave us several samples to try, and the food seemed pretty good. We were sceptical, but he offered us all kinds of discounts and freebies so we agreed to give it a try.
The first order we received was more expensive than I had anticipated - by about $25. We were charged for several service fees I hadn't expected, but I brushed it off as a first-time-order thing and didn't call to complain. I was disappointed by the quality of the produce and sadly surprised to find that nearly all of it came from major commercial growers and was definitely NOT local. The dairy wasn't anything special, and was priced at more than double what most grocery stores charge. The frozen food was poor quality and frostbitten, making it mushy when we prepared it according to the directions. Overall, I was definitely not impressed. But I decided to give them another shot. Not fair to judge on just one experience, right? Wrong. We have had problems with every single delivery from them ranging everywhere from missing items (which we were still charged for) to old, wilted, frostbitten and even moldy produce, to milk that goes bad a week before the expiration date, to food being delivered when I didn't order it (one bag was delivered when we were out of town and sat on my porch in the middle of July in Southern Utah, where average temperatures are above 110°. We found it when we got home that night and all the food had spoiled. They charged us anyway, and it took weeks to have our account credited back), and the list goes on and on.
This last month has made me the most angry. I decided to give their veggies one last chance, figuring that it's harvest time, so the odds of getting really good produce are at a high. The box I received contained wrinkled apples, wilted frostbitten lettuce, and moldy cherry tomatoes, among other things, and not one item was locally grown. Due to an error on their part from the previous delivery, I was supposed to have a credit on my account that totaled approximately $20, and when I was given the account credit, the person I spoke to assured me that that meant my next box of veggies would be free. The box I ordered was supposedly on sale for about $15. That, plus the $3.50 delivery charge should have brought my total to about $18.50, but I was charged over $22. I called to complain about the condition of the produce and to ask why I was charged. I had placed the order on the assumption that I would NOT be charged, because at the time I did not have any money in my bank account. When the charge went through, my bank account was overdrawn and I was fined $20 by my bank. They apologised for the condition of the produce and agreed to give me a refund. They had no record of my having a $20 credit, despite multiple assurances that it was there the previous time I called them. A few days later, I was refunded the money charged and they included $20 to cover the overdraft fee, which I do appreciate.
But the next day, a mysterious charge of $26.91 posted to my account. I had not ordered anything, they had not delivered anything, and it was not my area's delivery day. I called to complain (again) and they said it was a computer error, apologised, and asked for my credit card number so they could refund the money. (This was weird, since they clearly had my bank account information on file.) I gave it to them, and they said the refund should post in 2-5 business days. Well... 3 days later, I received a voicemail from them saying they were having trouble processing my payment and would I please call them to update my payment information. Uh... Payment? I called, and explained the situation (again) and asked where my refund was. They apologised (again) and asked for my credit card number (again) and said it would take 2-5 business days. (Now where have I heard that one before...?) Later that day, I was CHARGED $26.91 AGAIN! This was last night (Friday) and I didn't see the charge until this morning. I called to complain (AGAIN) and.....they're not open on Saturdays.
So I left them a very strongly worded message demanding that they refund me $54 IMMEDIATELY and that I was reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. I would like nothing more that to wash my hands of these crooks, but we are roped into a stupid delivery contract where we have to place 40 orders or they will charge us $50. I would just bite the bullet and pay the stupid $50 if they hadn't STOLLEN that amount right when my bank account was nearly empty and my car is in the shop with a hefty bill on the way. Thanks a heap guys! Because of your total incompetence, I am now financially screwed for the next month! Word to the wise - STAY AWAY from Winder Farms.
