The current principal must go! She pulls policies out of thin air that don't exist on paper! Under her leadership, the Math department has gone rogue! My kid who was a consistent 'A' student at middle school (feeder school from within the same district!) started failing in Math at Walton, 40's and 50's were all too common!
When asked, we were told that they don't give partial credit. Even the AP calculus exams give partial credit, but what is good for the college board is apparently not good enough for this school! The assistant principal said that they have had this policy for 16 years. In the 16 years, their national rank has only gone lower, not higher. The school gave a boat load of crap about how it improves precision! We even talked to a recent GA Tech graduate. He mentioned that they do give partial credit at GA Tech, without which he said that he could not have graduated! Their argument is that GA Tech knows that their grading is harsh. Granted that a lot of kids go to GA Tech from this school, but not all kids want to go to GA Tech. A 'C' in the transcript is a huge problem requiring a lot of explanation to schools outside of GA.
The Math teacher is a down-right bully. There are multiple reviews on this teacher on ratemyteachers.com with students reporting that "you should stay on her good side"! Apart from picking favorites to whom she gives full credit for wrong answers and zero to others, she ignores a kid in the class (as in won't respond!) who asks questions because she thinks he should know! She also told the class that she doesn't want parents emailing her about the "no partial credit" policy. She also told them that most of the kids just want to pass the course. Au contraire! Most of the kids there want to do well. She has a callous attitude and has no empathy. We reported the issue of favoritsm to the school. Again, the assistant principal did nothing and said that she is a great teacher! Even if so, she is in a profession which requires empathy. She is not a fit for this job, if she has none! In addition to the bad grades she gives for tests and quizzes, she picks up classwork (right after teaching the concept) for quiz grade and further fails them! The kids haven't even had a chance to understand and review the concept.
I suggested a few common sense things to the school such as sending their Math policy to middle schools and giving a chance for the kids to waive down a level before sending papers to Walton. Currently, the parents and kids are caught unaware about their Math policy. The suggestions fell on deaf ears! The school allows 1 course per year to be taken online. When asked if my kid could take the course online, the principal pulled policies out of thin air and said that they don't allow the same subject to be taken online. There is no written policy on this! Being a public school, they must be accountable and have documented policies, they can't pull policies out of their butts! This principal must go!!
I would also encourage anyone with a grievance with the school to complain to the cobb county superintendent and assistant superintendent assigned to Walton. To find the current superintendent, please visit cobbk12.org/centraloffice/superintendent/
You can email the executive secretary to get more details regarding filing complaints or who the current assistant superintendent assigned to Walton is.
