In June 2017, I/WE were sent to Virtua Hospital by a 'Participating Provider' Doctor of our insurance policy. Prior to our visit to the Hospital we called the hospital to confirm that they were 'PARTICIPTING PROVIDERS' with our insurance company and that VIRTUA HOSPITAL would accept payment from our INSUNCE COMPANY as payment in full for services rendered. We were told by an employee of the billing dept. on the day before our first visit that "YES, VIRTUA HOSPITAL IS A 'PARTICIPATING PROVIDER' AND WILL ACCEPT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANIES PAYMENT AS PAYMENT IN FULL FOR SERVICES RENDERED BY THE HOSPITAL". So, the next day, we appeared for the tests.
We were asked to come back in July and August and September but decided to wait until VIRTUA HOPSPITAL accepted payment in full from our insurance company. in early September, 2017 an insurance payment was made to VIRTUA HOSPITAL and we received no further bills from the hospital so only then did we go back to the hospital for further tests Aas we deduced that VIRTUA HOSPITAL was being true to their word and acceptin payment from our insurance company as payment in full.Only after The next set of tests in October, 2017 and the subsequent BILLING for those tests and the tests done in June ,2017 did we start to receive bills from VIRTUA HOSPITAL that were in the THOUSANDS of DOLLARS. This is what is known in the INSURANCE INDUSTRY as a 'SURPRISE BILL'.
NOW, the 'SURPRISE BILL' is when a 'PARTICIPATING PROVIDER' sends the patient to an 'OUT-OF-NETWORK' Provider(VIRTUA HOSPITAL TOLD US THEY WERE 'IN NETWORK' and a 'PARTICIPATING PROVIDER'), this should NOT EVER BE DONE, and under current laws governing INSURANCE CLAIMS with Hospitals, Hospitals are NOT ALLOWED to coerce or other wise HARASS payment from a patient or guarantor until the INSURANCE PAYMENT PROCESS is still 'UNDER REVIEW' for payment from the INSURANCE COMPANY. However VIRTUA HOSPITAL HARRASSED THE HELL OUT OF ME AND THREATENED TO RUIN MY CREDIT UNLESS I ENTERED INTO AN AGREEMENT WITH THE HOSPITAL TO MAKE PAYMENT.
VIRTUA HOSPITAL WOULD NOT PUT THE AGREEMENT IN WRITING TO ME AS VIRTUA HOSPITAL ARE FULLY AWARE THAT THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO SO UNTIL THE INSURANCE CLAIM PROCESS IS COMPLETE, BUT THAT DID NOT STOP VIRTUA HOSPITAL FROM DOING EXACTLY THAT. DEMANDING PAYMENT UNDER THREAT OF RUINING MY CREDIT, AND I HAVE THE BILLS WITH THAT SPECIFICALLY SPELLED OUT ON THE BILLS, BEFORE THE INSURANCE CLAIM PROCESS FOR A 'SURPRISE BILL' HAS CONCLUDED.
