They are not being completely transparent at the moment, but I am having a great experience so far. You get what you put into it. If you work hard to open slots and keep a consistent schedule, build meaningful relationships with students and parents, and do a great job teaching, you will reap what you sew. Generally, I have only had a handful of problems with IT issues and soft cancellations. They are not totally understanding with these issues and there can be miscommunication but I am satisfied with the flexibility of the job and the students are what keep me going.
VIPKID first of all is a company of women, for woman, and by a woman. If you are a male, make sure to be prepared to be mistreated. This is a sexist, ridiculous, unfair company to men.
Now, with that being said, the pay sucks, considering that in many cases you will have to wake up in the middle of the night to work for 25 minutes and to be paid $7.50. I did not mind this so much for the first month. But after working very hard, trying very hard, and dealing with the fact that this company caters to women, and treats males as secondary employees, the last straw came when this company tried to pay me half of what I earned for a work I did with a student who was absolutely anti-social, rude, and weird.
What happened is that I was on time as usual, waiting for this nightmare to come onto the screen. HIs mother came and asked me to wait. I waited about 10 minutes and this disaster of a child finally came, and would not sit still, but kept leaving, and screaming, and whatever. It was impossible to teach. But I don’t give up on children, so I kept trying to administer the lesson. Finally, after about 22 minutes into the lesson, this rude little monster, or maybe his mother, turned off the screen, and were no longer there. So I contacted VIPKID, and told them, and long story short, I waited past the 25 minute mark until 28 minutes, because I did not want this shady company based in Beijing, known for exploiting children, cheap labor, and only God knows what else, to have an excuse not to pay me the $7.50 chump change they pay their employees. So after the lesson expired, I provided feedback for this child, and went to my home page, to find that VIPKID had designated this class as a “STUDENT NO SHOW”.
I immediately contacted them and told them that I needed to be paid the full amount for this class, and that my time needed to be fully compensated. These shady individuals working at this shady company, are trying to say that this student did not show. Even though he did show late, and I worked through only 2 slides, but was present and trying hard the entire 28 minutes, and most of all, I provided feedback, which is impossible for a true “STUDENT NO SHOW”.
I am awaiting a response from this shady company. But am already completely turned off and don’t want to have anything to do with this company. I have been doing nothing but working hard for these children and this company that does not care about men, or the male employees at this company. This company is a sham, and it caters to women, it will promote women, and men will rarely, in my view, get any opportunity, and the men are lucky if they are even treated fairly, and with a basic level of dignity.
Just be aware that this company will use you, if you are a man, it will waste your time, your efforts, and your talents, so be very careful with this company.
"Caters to women and does not give men any opportunity."
I invite you to apply to literally any other company in any industry and you will get many many more opportunities than women. Based on your review, it seems like you don't belong in the teaching world. Have fun with your male fragility.
I was Ripped Off by VIPKID ESL teaching Chinese children English. After, all the bad reviews online I should seen this is a warning for a scam. I passed the Demo and Interview with flying colors. I just completed my Masters in Elementary Education and have 6 years experience in teaching. Some guy named Andy was very rude telling me to close my pink blouse and I should have worn a orange shirt! He then told me to purchase a expensive headset. I had a well sound microphone. I could hear and see him well. First, Andy said I was hired and will proceed with the contract. 2 minutes later he said, I will need to verify some information and will email you. I got the email saying" Our interviewee found you to be a excellent teacher with experience but we have other stronger applicants. We can not move forward your apllication".

"I have taught for 12 years and at first VIPKid seemed so put together with all of their training videos and steps to becoming a teacher with them. As I started on, I was set to teach part-time. When I was scheduled to teach a class (you can pick your hours), I had no notification that a class was scheduled unless I got online. There are last minute bookings and if they are not caught in time (or you aren't checking your bookings online enough) you can miss and then it is counted against you as a missed class. There was no mention that most of the hours available are on the weekend (which was not easy to pull off for me).
The worst part was, I filled out two major forms for pay and RECEIVED NONE. I mentioned this to several staff members. I was told to fill out an additional form, and then never saw my pay come in. This was in August. It is now December!!! The last time I tried to contact the company, I heard nothing back. Very unprofessional, very hard to get in touch with superiors and they speak very little English usually.
