Universal Administrators have been taking monthly payments for years for a septic protection plan. Several times I have sent all the required information to file a claim for a collapsed pipe, but they ignore my claim.
I purchased a basic septic protection plan from universal administors from a telephone solication. I paid an annual fee of $149.95. My understanding was that should any problem arise with my septic system, they would fix it. When a problem occured, i just got the runaround and put-offs one after another. I did everything requested by universal administrators and then they would request additional information before they could send an inspector just to access the situation. Meanwhile i had a septic system failure.
Here is the recap of the situation and look at the final response of the company:
I printed out your basic septic protection plan. This is the first time that i have seen this document even though you have stated that you had previously sent it. I think it is obvious from my constant requests for a copy of it that i never had received it. I would appreciate the documentation of the “at least 2 occasions” that you had sent this document and will share that information with the bbb representative.
I am not an inspector of septic systems. I took out your protection plan with the understanding that if i had a problem, that you would fix it. I was surprised when you told me, after hearing the plumber’s determination that i had a septic problem and not a plumbing problem, that i had to pump out the system for your inspectors to inspect it. I did that immediately and notified you. I notified you promptly and expected to be told when your inspector would be here to see the situation. I never got any reply.

That message was never received. However, you noted my daily calling, stated that a service contractor will be scheduled shortly and as of this date i have heard nothing! what does “shortly” mean? That was 12 days ago.
After several attempts to contact you, i never received a reply. I was advised to check to see if you and/or your firm had had any similar complaints. Your file on “yscam” is extensive and filled with similar complaints like mine. I contacted the bbb to see if they could get you to respond to my request for service. That worked so far.
I have forwarded you information on my system and what history i have on how it was maintained in the past. You describe that detailed description of my system and note a comment made:
“repair report of 8/11/83
Remarks: repair of malfunction. Add 4 lines to system in between existing drain field lines. New box may be required – if new box is added and if possible add overflow to existing box. New box added. 5 old line Hephen?) on box.”
“evaluation report of prince william county health district
Review 2/8/90 evaluation 1/24/90
Remarks: drain field system was repaired in 1982 – existing 5 line system supplemented with 4 new lines and new distribution box being installed – no overt signs of malfunctioning. Recommend conservative water usage.”
This is information of 28 years ago by the prince william county. To paraphrase your contract, “old plumbing or in-ground lines may wear out”. The presentation made by your firm to convince me to take out your plan clearly indicated that i should purchase your plan because of the possibility that something might happen. Well, that possibility has happened.
If you are not aware, prince william county health district regulations require that all septic systems are pumped out on a three year schedule. They are very intense about the regularity of that schedule and, if not in compliance, i would be subject to a fine. They send out a timely notice of the requirement to pump out the system and require a report be filed with that department within the dates specified. I have never been fined.
What i cannot understand is why, when i contacted you immediately, it is over two weeks later and nothing has happened. I have my back yard torn up and i am in fear for a more serious problem with my backed up septic system. Why should it be this way when i have your company to protect me? Please explain.
Jack wainwright to:j. P. Landahl may 16 at 11:37 am as you stated in your note that there are very strict regulations in your county that require pump outs please send the last or previous two pump outs. I also note that the county advised you in 1990 that you should conserve water usage. We will try and contact the county to get a better detail of this and other information and be back to you shortly.
This is not the solution!! they should honor their committment and fix the issue.
