I was offered a job to be a dishwasher for this company called Tuscany Square. An ex-friend of mine was a line cook at this establishment and informed me that they were in desperate need of someone to take the place of an employee who had quit. I told him I was interested due to being out of work and would basically take any job I could get. BAD mistake. I was called by my friend one night and said my first day would be the next morning and I had to arrive at 10:00 am sharp. This doesn't seem odd until you realize no one in management had called me, met me, knew my name or even thought about interviewing me. I showed up anyway and immediately was made to go to work. No tax forms, no drug test, no copy of anything i.e. drivers license, SS card. I received nearly no training and was made to feel embarrassed if I had any sort of question about where certain dishes went or how certain operations were completed. I was happy that I had done previous kitchen work and knew at least a little about what I was supposed to be doing. Later on in my shift a man came up to me and introduced himself as the manager. We shook hands and asked me how I was liking the job to which I replied "it's definitely unconventional but I guess it's fine." He asked what was unconventional and I brought up that there was no interview, no tax papers, an employee number or any sort of way for me to clock in once I arrived at work. He then acted sort of surprised and brought me back to his office to "fill out papers." I walked in as he was placing an alcoholic beverage behind a couple of folders in hopes that I wouldn't see it. He asked me what my SS# was and I said I'd rather fill out paperwork over giving it verbally. He says "the last four will be your sign in on the time clock." So I just gave him the last four at first but then after he was looking at me awkwardly for a moment he reached in a folder and handed me a tax form, formal application and the employee rule sheet.
At this point I was a little skeptical but filled them out anyway. I handed him the papers and he did some things on the computer and then told me to get back to work. The shift ended and I went home. That night my friend called me again and told me to be back tomorrow at the same time. I showed up and was lead directly to the "sign in station" which was just a pad and pen where I was to write my last four digits down for the front manager and then brought to a machine where I was to put in my last four and hit enter which I guess they call their "sign in." The shift started normally and then I see the kitchen manager (the sketchy guy from the day before) walk out from the office and head towards the line where food was prepared. He fired up the grill, ovens, etc. and proceeded to start making food. No big deal right? NO. There was no sanitation, no gloves and I even WATCHED HIM OPEN MOUTH COUGH ALL OVER THE LINE FOOD! (loose veggies, bacon strips, cheese etc.) in refrigerated compartments. No effort to cover his mouth at all, no head turning, NOTHING. Just open-mouth COUGH all over fresh, unused food. HE then starts preparing orders. Apparently the line cook that day was running late and wouldn't be in for a while which is no big deal but the manager took charge which is cool but yet was ABSOLUTELY disgusting. He continued making food alongside the cook once he came in acting like that had never happened. The cook himself washed his hands, wore gloves and wiped down his station before even touching anything. The manager was still unsanitary, no gloves, still coughing on occasion and thinking nothing of it. I'm standing at my washing station looking into my dish water with utter disbelief. There were people eating this mans cooking after he was vigorously open-mouth coughing all over it. I sort of felt my skin crawl a bit. I ignored it for a while and was working as usual. Shift ended. Before I left that night the front manager came back and handed me a piece of paper with my hours on it for the rest of the week and after that I was walking out to go to my car and the kitchen manager met me before I could make it and he wished me a nice night and said "keep up the good work"- which is totally fine, normally, except he was visibly intoxicated and walking with a slight curve. I was off the next day or two and when it came time to go back I saw the kitchen manager in his office before I clocked in. He asked me to come over to ask me about something monotonous and I noticed he had a massive hunk of chewing tobacco in his lower lip. To each their own I suppose, but not in a restaurant LET ALONE in the kitchen. I go to my station and start working like any other day.
A few hours pass and I was able to take a break. Upon returning from my break I noticed him at the line station once again preparing food. No gloves, apron etc. again AS WELL AS the massive hunk of chewing tobacco in his mouth. CHEWING as your are preparing patrons food and spitting into the trash cans with tobacco juice. NASTY. I said something to one of the other workers expressing my concern and they just shrugged it off. A few more hours go by and the manager comes to get me for some side work in the place. I walk to him thinking nothing of it until he walks me outside and shows me that I am to be picking trash up IN A VACANT LOT BESIDE OF THE RESTAURANT WHICH THEY DON'T EVEN OWN OR ARE SUPPOSED TO MAINTAIN. I basically asked him why I was doing this and he said "It just makes the place look bad. It's not ours but I think it looks terrible so I want you to go over with a trash bin and weed through it to pick up trash. Thanks bud." Over grown grass, telephone wires, holes in the ground (which is a hazard especially with the overgrown grass) and broken glass. I was soaking wet from doing dishes and he's sending me out into the cold (Late November mind you) to pick up trash in a vacant lot. I looked like a total idiot. Employees coming out for breaks were even yelling in my direction asking what in the world I was doing. I was humiliated. I go back in about 45 minutes later to warm up and he said just to get back to washing dishes with a sly/slick look on his face. HE BASICALLY PUNISHED ME for what I had said to the other employee. I had enough. No interview, no training, sketchy business practices, low wages and plain bad kitchen practices.
There were numerous other health and sanitation issues- like, a laundry list. The next day I was scheduled off. I called up and resigned from my position with the front manager who had answered the phone. A week or so later around the day I was supposed to be getting paid for my hours I called up and asked when I could go in and grab my check. It was the kitchen manager on the line and he said not to worry about it, they were just going to mail it to me. A MONTH later I have still yet to be paid and when I would go up to the establishment to talk to a manager none of them are ever "in." This place is a rat-hole. Every employee hates their job there, ESPECIALLY the waiting staff. That's a whole other story on it's own entirely- trust me. That place should be investigated by the BBB, Health Department and the like. I'm giving them another week to give me my money and if they don't comply I will be going to the proper powers. 2/10 employment rating- considering I've literally emptied porta-johns (portable out houses) for a summer and I would give that job at LEAST a 5.5/10...that's saying something.
