ThredUP, Inc. Reviews

  • Nov 7, 2020

I can’t express how truly incompetent the ThredUp team is. First- it took SEVEN months for them to process my bag Second- they charged me for a shipping fee that was explicitly waived. I have customer service emails to demonstrate this, which I brought to the attention of the company. Third- to get ANYONE to respond I have to email the company at least 5 times. It takes them WEEKS to respond. There is No phone number either.

After receiving my information they did not send the merchandise (clothing). Only then did I realize there is NO WAY to get in touch with them. Now, I will have to go through the bank, who will file a dispute.

This company will take hundreds of dollars of top name brands and designer brand clothing and accessories from you but you will never hear from them again, nor will you make a dime. For about 3 years I had been sending in my clothing a lot with tags still on. Not walmart clothing. Top names. They would never let you know when they received your clothing or if you sold anything or if you made any money. If you didn't check yourself and had made money you only had a short time to claim the money. The most I ever made from them in a YEAR , from about 10 very large bags sent in, was around $14.

I understand they have overhead and costs themselves but this business is definetely a RIP OFF.

I sent thred up a bag full of Macy's designer wear at the end of May, I lost weight and was unable to wear the $500.00 suits I had purchase, and since ThreUP had advertised the were looking for such items, I thought this would be an easy transaction.

I paid to have my items sent back to me, nothing has been sent back, their Zen desk told me the items would be sent back August 31, 2017, it is now a week later and I have heard nothing. I sent them $1100+ worth of items...

Do not sent your clothes to this company, it is a scam to take your clothes and leave you with nothing.

I am continuing to watch for my items on the sale side, and plan on driving to San Francisco and filing a lawsuit in court.

This is pathetic!

I agree with another poster about my experience with this company. I sent them a full bag of clothing in good condition and opted for them to donate what they could not use. I am guessing the value was around $200 and I received $15 which I thought was OK. So I sent them another bag of items that I estimate were worth at least $400 to them and got back $23.

Whatever, it's a crap shoot. But what annoys me is that they did not provide an accounting of some items that I know are sellable (one handbag that I actually purchased from their site and never used), all they said was that some items are being kept because they are seasonal and were not on the list of up-front sales, that I would recive credits as they sold. Seriously? This was in early spring and I yet to see any of them on their site, maybe they will show up in fall, but I am not holding my breath.

I have also purchased a few items from them and was not pleased with any. The handbags were fusty, the tops and skirt I purchased were too streatched out to wear. I did buy a pair of high-end shoes that I liked and were in great condition and a fair price, but the size felt wrong. I could not even get into them.

So, overall, this has been a bust. I was not in this to make a buck. I thought this would be a win-win. I usually donate my clothing to the Salvation Army and feel good about helping them raise money and enabling lower-income women to afford to dress professionally, but I live in an area that has a lot of affluant residents (not me!) and the local resale stores are turning donations of clothing away. I thought Thread up would be a good way to make items available and affordable to other markets and would give me a little something new to try. I may buy from them again, but will never sell.

Thank you for letting me get this off my chest, I hope it helps. Maybe they will take notice of how frustrating their practices are. At least consumers will have a more realistic picture of what to expect.

I sent the company several items of clothing and shoes to sell on their website. The website has a place where you can request a bag. The only fee they show is &9.99 to have items they do not sell returned to you. After checking the website repeatedly and not seeing any of my items, I contacted them about it.

I can not remember how I did it, they do not provide anything other than the home office address. I later learned that they charge an additional $9.99 and $3.50. A lot of the items I sent were brand new with the tags still on them. I paid about $50 for a pair of shoes I sent and only got 75 cents for them.

There is nothing up front telling you what you will receive for items sold. I have no choice but to accept this because I did not read the frequently asked questions. This is where you can see how much you can make on an item. I just want everyone to know what type business this is.

Thred Up is a total SCAM!!

Let me tell you about my experience!! You must get enlightened before using them!

#1. It is difficult to contact them and they make it that way so they don't have to wast time speaking with you because I am pretty sure they get a lot of complaints.

I finally got in touch and had them send me a large ( the biggest one they have) bag and then I went about gathering things such as a brand new pair of Nurse Mates Shoes which were still in the box and never worn, I paid over $77.00 for them. I also sent them a new coat, two new tops still with the tags on them, they were obviously never worn as well as other things that I really can't recall, but I would say several hundrend dollars worth of stuff.

After a long while, I started getting emails saying, "you sold an item". Time and time again I would get the same email stating, "you sold another item".

When I looked at my account all I had to my credit was $16.00, Are you kidding me right now! Yes that is a true story.

I did email or contact them via Face Book, remember, they really don't want to speak with anyone and make contacting them nearly impossible, questioned why I only had $16.00 and they came back with, "you had to pay $8.00 in shipping" and they also said I could go on their web site which is very difficult to find info on and look up items if I wanted to know how much things were going to sell for.

Really now, I also explained to them that my daughter had sent a whole bag of stuff which she never heard from them again, they were unable to explain this.

Thred Up went on to say I could get my $16.00 via pay pal or a Visa Card, I chose Visa Card as I didn't want to share a % of my whopping $16.00 with pay pal so I opted for the Visa Card which I have yet to receive!

This place is a total RIP OFF!! I wouldn't recommed it to anyone unless you like being ripped off!!

I cannot stress enough to absolutely NOT consign with Thred Up!! I cannot comment on shopping their website but I can attest to my dealings with them sending in their "clean out bags". I'll try to keep this to the point. First experience was about 6 months ago when they partnered with Macy's and the credits you earned for the clothes you sent them was put on a Macy's gift card. I requested my first bag, promptly filled it and sent it in. Turn around time was pretty reasonable and of the 38 pieces of clothing I sent them, they accepted 29 and was paid $60 and some change on a Macy's gift card. I was conservative in how much I sent in and what I sent in for this first trial because I wanted to "test the waters" so to say. I was pretty pleased with the outcome first time around so ordered another "clean out bag". This time I selected the option to have the unwanted items returned mainly because I was sending in some higher end and quality items which included 5 pair of designer shoes and 2 Coach handbags along with 48 pieces of clothing. Let me add that you do not get any kind of "receipt" or confirmation email indicating that you've selected to have your unwanted items returned, just an email confirming they received your request and your bag will be on it's was soon - this is important to remember.

After waiting over 2 months and way past the deadline they told me my bag would be processed by, I received an email informing me that my bag had been completed and they again, ironically, accepted 29 items for a total of $56.55 - this included them accepting a few pair of the designer shoes I sent them but not the Coach handbags (one of which still had tags on it and had never been used). I emailed them to ask when my unwanted items would be returned and they informed me that I had not selected that option and those items were gone for good - including the Coach handbags!! We emailed back and forth a couple of times and they told me if I could provide "documentation" of selecting the return option, they would CONSIDER compensating me for my loss. Of course I had no such "documentation" for the reason I explained earlier. My last email was asking for a customer service phone number to be able to actually speak with someone instead of communicating via emails - take note that on their website or anywhere on the internet will you not find a customer service phone number. That email was a week ago and I have gotten no response from them.

Like I said, I cannot comment on buying things from them but will not ever consign with them and have informed all my friends and encourage you to take my warning to heart and not do it as I guarantee you will be disappointed. Granted, I wasn't 100% pleased with how much they gave me for my items the first time around but their website's idea and concept was more convenient than driving to a local consignment store which is why I tried it the second time and that time sent many more things as well as designer items. Their customer service is, without a doubt, less than a one star rating. It's understandable why they do not post a customer service phone number and only "live chat" times and an email address. This way if they want to ignore your questions, complaints and dissatisfaction, they just don't respond to you. I will never consign with them again nor purchase anything and that would only be because of their extremely poor customer service. You make your own decision but if you choose to deal with them, but be prepared to be disappointed.

Whatever you do, don't sell your clothes through ThredUP. What a ripoff. And to top it all off, they charge you a fee for sending the clothes back to them, which was NOT mentioned. It was supposed to have been free. Here is MY experience with this horrible company:

I requested a clean-up kit from ThredUp.. Now, when I requested this kit, NOTHING was mentioned about them charging a ($4.99) fee to ship the clothes to them.

I sent in 10 bottoms, 13 tops, 3 dresses and 2 (brand new) thigh high boots..Alot of the items were brand new. If not new, they were in like-new condition. Long story short, I only received a $13.50 payout. That is NOT inlcuding the hidden return shipping fee, making it a lousy total of $8.51.

Now, here's the kicker. ThredUP accepted SEVENTEEN (17) of my items. They are selling these items for a total of $148.83. Something is seriously wrong with their figure and my payout amount. They are making a HUGE profit off of my clothes alone. How much of a profit are they making off of other "sellers" combined?

I strongly urge you to stay away from this company. Do NOT send your clothes to ThredUP for them to sell. They will rip you off and steal from you.

Don't sell clothing here I sent 2 large bags of name brand items with tags still on some... they gave me a few dollars store credit live and learn. Wish I had my items back I could have sold in a garrge sale and made so much more or donated I will never do this again.

ThredUp has no moral compass. I sent in my gently used items (about 20-30 articles of clothing). Some items had never been worn. They offered me $1.50 and now will not return my items. I opted in to return assurance, but they said I did not. I would not send this company one item of clothing. I would also not buy from this company. I have read awful experiences with that side of the business as well.

I sent my "New with The Tags" items to Thredup.com.

They paid me less than $1.00 for each $29 - $39 item.

I sent over $130 (Retail) and received $9.95 Credit towards a purchase from their site!

I do not recommend this company to anyone! I woiuld rather give it to the thrift store.
