The Sterling Gardens Hotel Reviews

  • Oct 21, 2016

On October 8th at approximately 7pm my daughter and I checked into the Sterling Garden Hotel located at 1808 Fremont Street. I booked this hotel through Getaroom.com. Upon check-in I was told I would have to give a $100 deposit on the room that would be refunded after check out. This $100 is supposed to cover any damages. When we entered the room we noticed it was not at all like the pictures on the website. I do realize that we did not book at 4 star hotel and it was not going to be perfect. There were numerous people that were staying in the hotel and when I asked our neighbor if the hotel was safe he told me that he and his wife were living there for the past 1 – ½ years. Looking around it was obvious that there were many long term people there. We went to the store and Freemont Street and when we returned to the room we noticed many things that weren’t right.

The sheets and shower curtain were stained, the floor looked like it had not been washed or cleaned under the bed in some time. The mattress and box spring were wrapped in plastic and when I pulled back the cover there was a bug underneath. When attempting to lock the door from the inside the lock did not work. We ended up putting a chair in front of the door for the night since it was late. In the morning we looked for another hotel to move to since moving to another room would not have made us any more comfortable. At 3:00pm after we had pack up all of our clothes and loaded our car I went to the front desk to inform them that we would be checking out. The person at the front desk (Maria) was helping some guests check in when I informed her we were checking out. She asked me if there was a problem with the room. I did inform her of the bug that I found on the bed and she apologized and said she would speak to the manager. I contacted Getaroom.com multiple times to try to get the issue with the room resolved. I have attached the emails that have gone back and forth regarding this situation. I was told to call on October 10th between 10:00-11:00 to speak with the manager. When I called at 10:10 Maria answered the phone and was quite nasty stating the manager was refusing to refund any of my money and when housekeeping went into the room they noticed that the handle/lock was broken and this was going to cost $200 to fix. I took multiple pictures of the room (enclosed) including the door which was not broken. Yesterday October 17th I received pictures from Sterling Gardens of the broken lock which I took to A-1 Security Locksmith (phone 414-447-5200) and spoke with Isaac Sawyer a certified locksmith. He reviewed the pictures and determined that the lock was not broken and the wires were all intact. He did determine that the plate was removed from the inside of the door and there was no damage to the handle or lock. He did inform me that this door handle and lock are only about $300 new. The hotel is refusing to refund any of the money for when I was not in the room and keeping the $100 deposit for the “broken” door handle and lock. Getaroom.com has given me a 10% refund which amounts to $30.95. When I booked this room I paid $309.46 + $100 deposit at the time of check in. So I ended up paying $409.46 for on night in a horrible hotel. This has been an awful experience which will make me think twice about coming back to Las Vegas because I feel as if I have been scammed. It turns out that Maria Schwinof is the owner of the hotel and she lied and deceived me multiple times on the phone and in person about who she was.
