In June of 2015 I contated Jill Hughes of EditorPro. She was reffered to me by a family friend who only knew that she was an editor. I had written an adventure book and wanted a full service editor with experience with this type of book. Jill ensured me that this was her forte. She told me that if I got the manuscript to her in July she would have it wrapped up by late September.
She did not get a first edit to me until late fall. It was bascially a partial word edit with the stellar advice "go back and make changes and take your time". Her only suggestions were to eliminate poltically incorrect statements and to write a prolouge and mabye a conclusion on why travel was important, the latter of which I thought was lame. She also changed the spelling of "moai" which was correct, so I had to go back and change her edits. She also changed all my A.M.s and P.M.s to lower caps, which of course was also wrong on her part.
Her second edit consisted of wanting me to be more descriptive of foods. Keep in mind that this is an adventure book, not a dining guide. She did cut one long chapter into two parts and gave placement spots for photos I was including. I verbally expressed my discontent with what little she had done. I did not have a final edit from her until April 2016. She would not let me see it until I paid her the balance of her $5000 fee.
When I went through it was obvious I would be better off getting another editor and going through it myself. There were over 140 missed edit such as double words, left out words, etc. This does not count punctuation mistakes of which there were many. I had not done a lot of editing myslef since I was paying 5 grand for someone else to do it. She would not respond to emails or phone calls in regards to this from me or my new editor. She finally replied that "our businsess transactions were done" and that I had two opportunites to complain about her work. I did complain of course, but did it verbally as I was giving her the benefit of the doubt since she knew some family friends.
She refused to acknowledge her many mistakes even though I attached a matrix with each one listed by page number. The $5000 I spent with her was a total waste in my opinion and she even sent me a cease and desist letter for trying to get a partial refund. It was a letter any 7 year old could download without any leagal merit. My attorney has sent her a letter demanding a total refund or he will sue her for the full amount and legal fees. I would advise anyone looking for any type of editing work to steer clear of her based on my experience. She was not only very late with her work, but in my opninon totally incompetent and dishonest.
