After finding both of my vehicles gone from my residence, the police referred me to the clunker junker. My ex had BOTH of my vehicles towed/sold to them w/out my consent. I contacted clunker junker immediately, as the vehicles and personal property w/in them was important to me. Jessica did a little researching while I was on the phone w/her. At first only finding one of the vehicles(account w/them under his name), but then the other(account w/them under my name) as well. She did give me the tow company's phone #, and stated she would talk w/her supervisor and research the incident. I asked for him to follow up w/anything she found out, including supporting documentation, this being Friday 6/11/21.
I did call the next day, but they aren't open on weekends, so waited till Monday to hear back from them. On Monday afternoon, since I hadn't heard anything I contacted them again. After initial speaking w/a different person, and asking for a supervisor, was referred to Jessica. She stated she had left me a VOICE MAIL. I said I never received any VM, text, or email. When I asked date /time she wasn't sure, but would check her records. Upon checking her records, stating she left sick on Friday, she realized she never sent the EMAIL.
She had no further comment, other than to send the email. I don't know if I mentioned the towing company does not answer/take calls, and the "mailbox is full" is the only message you get, as a consumer calling. I then did a little online research, and found the "founder"s name and email(Eric Mitz; [email protected] ). So I emailed him, and requested any help he could provide. Seeming helpful at first he did provide some info which was at best redundant w/what I already knew/had.
Then I began to ask more questions, since there were statements on the webpage, suggesting how they made selling your car safe, legal, etc for both the buyer and seller. Here are some of the questions: 1. Since the web page says: "If we can buy your car without the title, you almost always need some other form of proof of ownership. This is usually a photo ID matching a valid and current registration for the car, or in some states like Washington an "affidavit in lieu of title"." What exactly did he show as proof? 2. "To help our sellers feel more at ease, The Clunker Junker offers a 100% payment guarantee. What that means is in the extremely rare case were a check from our carrier or local junk car buyer bounces or is otherwise invalid, The Clunker Junker will cover the payment out of our own pocket.
We have extreme confidence in our carriers and buyers, and having purchased over 40,000 cars we are proud to say we have never had an unresolved payment issue. Check our our Better Business Bureau rating and our positive online reviews!" Did he get a check or cash? Was the check made payable to him? Has it cleared? At this point Eric didn't want to answer any of these, what I thought to be "simple questions". I did a little more research. Contacted the Phila PD (2nd division) about the tow company. Found out that is a residential area, w/no businesses. Then used the MC# and discovered the tow company has not been licensed or insured since 2014. Despite that fact the Clunker Junker has no problem sending them out to unsuspecting citizens who see/believe all their reassurances as stated on their webpage.
