TaxAct, Inc. Reviews

Their software guided me through my 2020 tax returns that were filed electronically, however they included a $1200.00 deduction that was later flagged by the IRS an invalid (see attach) so now I’m paying an additional $1200.00 tax bill.

Just to be clear I have no tax prep expertise and rely solely on tax prep software to file my taxes. The deduction referenced above was assigned via their standard interview process and not chosen by me nor inserted manually. In addition their software gave no warning pop-ups or other signs that anything was amiss, rather I was given an “all green light” that my return was safe.

The IRS never received my 2016 return. According to TaxAct, I didn't finish clicking various buttons to e-file. I know I went all the way through the process. I have a copy of the return.

I paid what I owed through a 3rd party online. TaxAct took my money as well, now they say it's my fault. I'm out $27 and may be facing penalties for late filing all they can say is I have to mail it in.

On Feb 3.2017 I found an advertisement on the internet offering to perpare, print, and file tax returns for free. I had used this company before so I decided to use them again. All through the process of preparing my return, I was asked to up-grade to a different service. I declined all their offers to up-grade. as my returns are very basic. When I completed my return I was told it was time to print my federal and Iowa returns.

I proceded to print but when I hit the print button I was hit with the $ 15.00 charge to print my retuns. As I spent some time perparing my returns I went ahead and used my credit card. When the printing of my federal return was done I was told to print my Iowa return. I was hit with a $ 29.00 charge to print my Iowa return. That was when I was done with this rip-off company. I then found a different tax service on the internet making the same offer FREE. is the service I used and I prepared, printed, and filed both returns for FREE.

Also saved me money as the payment I owed on the federal return was less than the return TaxAct figured for me.

When you reach the end of your Federal Tax Return you are charged $15.00 to print and e-file. Then when you reach the end of your State return you are charged $25.00 just to print and if you want to e-file you are charged an additional $20.00. I am going to OTL online which is on $7.95 for each return.

TaxAct claims their online tax return service is free but is not! I entered my tax info then a screen popped up requesting $14.99 each before I could file. My personal info is sitting there at risk & I'm unable to delete it!

I am a tax preparer using TaxAct software. I have been having troubles getting in touch with tech support. The phone is always busy and if I send an email, they will answer in 2 to 3 days. Mean while I am losing business.

Don't use this software because you cannot get tech support. I had this software for 3 days already and I cannot do my job. Next year I plan to use another software company.

I filed a tax return with TaxAct and all was well. The next day after signing up, a fraudulent company used personal information to get into my checking account, (Of 19 years- which has never been compromised) and withdrew a small amount, which I missed.

On December 28th, the same fraudulent company (HBE premiums) withdrew over $800.00, and then I noticed! I called my bank and got my account closed, then checked out who had my routing number and personal account number.

Three companies had this info, two of them I ruled out due to the fact that they recieved my bank info after the first fraudulent withdrawl, however I realized that the day before the first fraudulent withdrawl, I had signed up with taxact. I then went onto their website from my email, so as not to be confused. I called customer service to discuss it with them, to let them know they may have a security risk. The guy I spoke with was frustrating (that's being nice)

I finally got him to get a supervisor, as he was purely wasting my time, she got on the line and was brusk at first and then I believe she realised I wanted to let them know that there was an issue with their security.

While waiting for her (She put me on hold for awhile) I went onto their website again and noticed that the security icon in the upper left hand corner had a yellow alarm icon that warned the site was NOT secure. At first the icon was green, but within a few seconds it turns yellow. So, one's info is NOT secure with TaxAct.

When Rachel got back onto the line she stated that they will look into it...and will let me know if they find anything. I doubt I will hear from them again.

Their site is NOT secure. I would reccommend NOT using TaxAct.
