Bought a laptop with hardware they knew to be defective - said I should return it and pay more for an upscale model, one that they said would work. Their full 30 day money back guarantee is a lie. They would not refund shipping in either direction so cost me $87 to unload a defective laptop, I had paid $40 to have it shipped to me when I bought it, then I had to pay $47 to have it shipped back. I packed it up for return in the shipping container in which I had received it and made sure it was well secured in the packing material The laptop was in pristine condition not a mark on it, I had had it for less than a week. When they processed the return, they sent me an email with multiple pictures of scratches all over the unit which were NOT present when I had packed up the unit. It was highly unlikely that these occurred during shipping, but even in the unlikely even that those had, they also depicted scratches INSIDE the CLOSE LAPTOP LID which would have been IMPOSSIBLE to have occurred during shipping. So they charge me an additional $75 for that, it ended up costing me over $167 for the horrifying experience. Their claim that they design computers for Linux is misleading – the consumer needs to use the exact same operating system (distro) they designed the laptop for in order for all the hardware to properly work (in this case, Ubuntu). In the Linux world, users put any number of Linux distros on their equipment, and I have never had that much trouble getting Windows equipment to work with Linux. It was a million times more painful working with this laptop which was “supposedly” designed for Linux. Even with the distro that came with the unit, the wifi adapter had a myriad of issues. System76 is a rip off, and their return policy is a lie, and I suspect that the people in the RMA department inflicted the damages on the unit I returned so they could recoup the cost of paying an emplyoee to process the return.
