On March 10th I contacted Sylvan Learning Center about enrolling my daughter in their program. I paid $134 that day to complete a learning assessment and registration fee. I was approved for an $8000 Promotional No-Interest Plan by, Your Tuition Solution through Comenity Capital Bank. That same day Sylvan debited the account for $6240, the total cost of the agreed hours my daughter would need to complete 18 months of the program.
I signed her up on March 10 with the intention to start March 16. March 12th I informed Sylvan she won’t be attending due to the Pandemic. I was told by Adam Rutka Slidell/Metairie Center Director, that the center will sanitized and take every measure to keep the kids and staff safe. I explained to him that my mom had medical problems and I was scared, I didn’t want to take any chances because she’s my daughters’ caregiver while I work. I stressed to him that I would like a refund. He stated he would have to speak to the center’s owner Sal Cusanza and get back with me.
March 13th we was informed all schools were closing. March 14th I called Adam to see if he spoke with Mr Cusanza, because I didn’t receive a call yet. Adam assures me he would speak to Mr Cusanza that day. He apologized that he had been busy. I reiterated to him I was trying to stay ahead of it all because I didn’t want to receive a bill from the company that approved me for the line of credit. March 16th the state shut down all non-essential businesses.
I spoke to Adam March 17th, he explained that Sylvan will be doing distant learning virtually through FaceTime or Skype. I initially explained to Adam my daughter have learning disabilities due to Hydrocephalus. So a program like that wouldn’t work for my daughter. I just wanted a refund for now because the bank would be looking for their payment soon. He asked me to send an official email, which I immediately sent.
March 18th Adam said the owner approved the refund request and it was forwarded to be processed by Julie Costales. He also stated they will not refund the $6240, they will only refund $4740 because “Your Tuition Solution charge the Learning Center processing fees” I questioned the reason because my daughter never received any services from Sylvan and the State closed all businesses due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. I immediately notified Your Tuition Solutions to explain what was happening. I was told by Alex a representative for Your Tuition Solution, that Your Tuition Solution wouldn’t charge any fees because my daughter never started the program.
March 30th I received a bill. I called Tuition Solution, spoke with Alex again he stated that the payment hadn’t been refunded yet, and to give it a couple days. He was also in communication with the Learning Center. I called Adam at the learning Center I find out why the payment hasn’t been refunded. Adam said they were trying to give it a week to see what was going to happen with the pandemic. At this time I’m in tears. I bluntly told Adam I felt like I was getting the run arounds for my money. I communicated with him two days after I signed my daughter up that I wanted to cancel because of the pandemic, I believe he deliberately prolonged this whole process and now the company is billing me. Sylvan received all $6240 plus the $137 from me. Adam informed me that I could call the Credit Card Company because of the pandemic and they can put the payment on hold and not charge late fees. I was livid.
April 17th, Sylvan refunded Your Tuition Solution $5252. Sylvan claimed they had a $987 charge for putting together a program for my daughter. $987 to put what program together?? First Adam said they were only refunding $4700 because of processing fees incurred to Your Tuition Solutions. Once it was clarified that there were no fees because no services were rendered, now this. So why would Sylvan take time to work a teaching plan when I told them my daughter would not be starting the program as planned. Is this how Sylvan Learning center treats customers during a Pandemic?
So my question to you is, how do I resolve this issue of my refund of $987
