Only my third recording after finding them via the internet. It was also a recommendation too as well, on the internet. It was terrible! A heads up if you are wanting to get a quality music recording production.
I am a female singer and i write some songs, and i wanted a full production done as i heard without it no one would take one seriously for promotion. I went in there to talk to the owner a Paul Higgins and the gear he showed me seemed fine. And he basically went over what was required for me to hear, to get a sale?
He said "We will finish the song to a commercial standard for you". But, the position of getting a contract or written agreement or anything in writing was out of the question. They refused. I ended up getting this older engineer. They indicated that they had no access to live musicians, and only did virtual instruments? This was obviously to get a higher cut of the fees for there studio. They assured me being new that the sound would be equivalent of any live musician playing.
They have a high schools program called "Kool schools" and have concentrated on this form of work. They extensively promote this program for youth projects at schools. Hence, when it came to real musicians playing, they really struggled, and i was under the impression, besides what they were stating, they were not available. They are essentially a kids recording studio. So besides showing you on there web site and presentations of big flashy boards and being able to record drum and keyboards, it is all a fancy charade.
I was quoted on email for 10 hour two day blocks, and got 8 hour blocks instead. They do not care, once i gave over the money, even though i was a female singer only doing my third song. Anyone with a decent ear for sound could tell the result. There was no compression, no mastering, no edits. All of which i paid for by the way. I had to go elsewhere to finish it.
They were so rude on the phone, offering me no opportunity to finish it without incurring more cost? I earlier was considering a further song, but without musicians, and the way the song was sounding, i thought better of it and i said NO. Wanted me to finish it there, and after the way i was treated, and from what i was quoted by email i said - No thanks! Besides, parking there is impossible in the middle of busy Collingwook on Johnston Street.
I had to go to another company to finish it, but it would be at the same cost. They wanted me to finish it there for more $ than quoted. No thanks. These people hung up on the phone with me, as i was getting no where trying to resolve the issue. Studio 52 is fine maybe to do kids projects, but no way for serious recording artists.
