On 04/07/2016, I went to Stony Brook hospital after an episode of anxiety and Panic attack. Because of anxiety and panic attack I was feeling severe chest pain and shortness of breath. I felt like I was having a heart attack. I managed to drive my self to stony brook emergency department. At the triage room, I explained to them my situation, my chest pain, shortness of breath and feeling of having a heart attach. My heart related concern is because of the heart related problems in my family. The nurse at the triage took my vitals and asked me to wait for few minutes to be seen by a doctor. After 5 minutes, the nurse took me to CPEP, which at this point I have no idea what it stands for and who gets admitted there. I was handed over to a bulky African American male nurse, who seemed to have a rough night because of his attitude. He asked me how could they be of help to me. I responded that I have anxiety attack and because of that I have severe chest pain and shortness of breath. I want to be treated for that.
He said ok and that they would help me with my issue. Then they took away all my possessions and searched me with metal detector. After that they took me inside this isolated chamber, which looked very creepy. I didn't feel right and I have no idea where I am. They immediately asked me for urine sample, which I gave them. Then they told me to wait. This is around 12am now. One hour passed. 2 hour passed and I have not been seen by anyone for my chest pain. Nurses walk by with attitude but don't say anything. Then I made the mistake of getting up and asking one of the nurses for help, who were sitting behind a class window. I told them that when will I be able to see a doctor for my chest pain and get treatment. There were four nurses. At first they didn't respond to my question. Then they completely ignored my existence. After insisting and asking it questions few times, they looked at each other and started laughing. One of the male nurses, while laughing said to the other nurse, "watching him make up stories as the night progresses, such a liar, go sit there". I was shocked when I heard that. 10 minutes later I saw 3 patients come out to the lobby where I was sitting. This is when I realized that I was in psych ward and CPEP is for mentally ill patients.
I agree that I have anxiety and panic attacks but I was not a mental patient. I was not suicidal or dangerous to myself and anyone else. Infact, I drove to hospital to get treatment for what I thought a possible heart attack. Anyways. After four hours I went again to the window, and asked if I will get any treatment. At this point the nurses there treated me like s***. They talked to me as if I have no existence. I told them that they are not treating me for my chest pain then they should let me go so that I can get treatment somewhere else. To that, the nurses replied that you came here to us for help and now we decided your faith. We tell you what to do and when you will leave. In here you have no rights. We are your everything.
I was shocked; I could not believe what I was hearing from these nurses. I demanded my basic rights to deny treatment if I don't want it. To that, I was told that here we decide your treatment and your rights. I got really mad and said that they can't hold me here against my will. One of the male nurses from the corner of the room looking at his computer shouted, "Listen, you go there and sit on that comfortable chair for as long as we want you to sit there and shut your mouth. If you don't shut up, I will inject you with s*** that will put you to sleep for as long as we went and you can't do anything. “This treatment basically dehumanized me and made me condition worst. I suffered for 9 hours with excruciating chest pain, anxiety, panic and fear. After 9 hours a psychiatrist saw me and after evaluation told me that I should not be in CPEP. They made a mistake. Even then they said that I am free to go but before that they must talk to a family member just to complete formalities. At this point my family was in the hospital looking for me and when they found that I was in psych ward (CPEP) they were furious and angry. They demanded my immediate release from there. The nurse lied to my family that I received treatment for my chest pain and not they are trying to clear me for mental illness. What a b******* lie. The 9 hours that I spend in CPEP in stony brook were the worst moments of my life for two reasons. First, I was missing diagnosed and sent to CPEP mistakenly. Second, I was treated like s***, like an animal, denied all human rights, threatened and denied timely treatment. I just want to give you guy’s heads up. If you ever happen to go to stony brook hospital and they try to admit you to CPEP. Run the hell out of there as fast as you can. If you want to leave that hospital with healthy state of mind, avoid CPEP. No body in that department has anything to do with humanity, respect, and providing treatment to patients in need. In fact, they will make your conditions worst and leave you with nightmares.
In 2007 I took a wrong medication and I had a severe bad reaction to the medication. I was in the hospital for 4 days. When I left I went right to Florida. Because I was a student that year I thought I had MedicId and the bill was being paid. I moved to Florida shortly after the stay. So in 2009 I recieved a call from the NY State Attonrney Civil Collections Bureau Mrs Aba Grossweiler she told me I had a $28,000 judgment against me and asked if I had a job and I could pay and I told her no I was in school for being an electrician and she says " Electrican they make good money (like eventually we are going to get you) that was it I told her I couldn't afford to pay and I was suprized that I had a judgment against me because I never received any court summons.
So I moved back to NY in 2010 and I called Stony Brook Hospital and asked for a bill explaining the $28,000 charges for just a 4 day stay. They told me they couldn't give me a bill because it was too old and that it was with the State Attorney Civil Collections Bureau. So I called the Civil Collections Bureau and asked if I could make a payment plan or have the bill reduced . They tell me no you have to pay the whole $28,000 and then we will talk about the interest. I again asked for a copy of my bill so they said no. So I started researching my rights and in 2014 I got all the copies of the legal papers and I see the "proof of Service. They describe my aunt who is about 4-10 and 62 looking more like 70 because of severe scholisis and they say she was 50 years old and 5-7 so they totally never served my aunt because the description was completely wrong. Also I find out that there is a law enacted in 2007 called the NYHFAL New York Hopital Financial assistance Law which states that a hospital can no longer take advantage of uninsured underinsured patients and they have to give us reduced billing and if we qualify for Medicaid at time of service they cannot take us to court of commended collections activity against us.
So I go to the court and file a motion to vacate the default judgement. I show the NYHFAL law I show pictures of my aunt and her height and her age. I show my tax return for 2007 and I qualified for Medicaid I show the address they served me in Florida I had an electric bill in my name an a differ t address then where they supposedly served me. So the judge denies my motion saying I didn't have a good defense. We'll not surprising I was trying to fight the state attorney myself and who does the judge work for? So I finally got the bill and this is what the bill me $160 for 2 generic Tylenol $180 for two alcohol breath tests yet no alcohol in my system $5,000 in various Valuim Charges ( some days they said they gave me around 10 doses is this even medically possible $4500 a night for room charges $1600 for urine drug tests This is a scam their is a law against them billing me outrageous prices that's supposed to protect me. How can this be legal. I tried to get help from the Community Service Organization and the State Attorney Civil Collections Burea says they sent me a charity care application in Florida. They lied they never sent me nothing they never offered me a discount price if so why not offer it now they never offered it. So I'm with a 2 year old now and I was so depressed when he was born I tried suicide 2 times I feel completely hopeless that my own state can do whatever they want and scam me charge whatever they want does anyone agree with me how can they get away with charging me $160 for 2 generic Tylenol ? If anyone is a lawyer and can help me sue Stony Brook Hospital for fraud and malicious prosecution and violation of the NYHFAL law please contact me Help me Howard was going to help me but he said the bill from 2007 was too old but he agreed the price sheet was insane
