Recently I received a couple of Stein Mart gift cards totalling $150. Having never shopped there before I headed over to steinmart.com to check it out. It was July 5th, 2018 and their promo was "take an additional 40% off on clearance items" so I spent a good amount of my time shopping those clearance items and was able to find some pretty good deals. I proceeded to checkout entering the gift cards and paying the remaining balance with my credit card. Everything seemed fine/normal up to this point, I even received email order confirmation/invoice right away. Three days later, on Sunday afternoon, I get an email from online services at stein mart stating "my order has been cancelled " with no further details or explanation. I immediately called customer service and was told it could be a glitch in their system that the order looks fine but the rep didn't know why it was cancelled on the same day it was ordered.
Nor did she know why I had only just now received notice of cancelation, three days later. She went onto say that their "order review department" was closed being a Sunday but she would talk to them and contact me back on Monday. I received no correspondence on Monday and had to call them again after work. I spoke to the same rep who said she talked to the king and he said he doesn't see anything wrong with the order either, other than the use of multiple forms of payment ie: two gift cards and a credit card, which could according to them cause their system to glitch, thus canceling the order. She then offered to reinstate the order recommending that I use only one form of payment such as my credit card. So it sure seems like they don't want to redeem the gift cards that they have previously sold to hard working and unsuspecting gift givers. At this point I'm asking for a full refund in the form of a check or credit to my card because this whole ordeal is way more than I bargained for. They can't do that she says but I should have already received an email with tracking info for the replacement gift cards and I will get a credit to my credit card for the balance remaining. I told her not only did I not receive said email, I don't want their worthless gift cards because I'm never going to use them or give them to anyone after all this nonsense. Seems to me they're fully aware of this glitch in their system so why don't they fix it? There's no glitch it's preprogrammed and controlled by them. I don't normally make posts like this but my experience has inspired me to do whatever I can to help prevent others from becoming victims of this and wasting their time and hard earned money. One shouldn't have to beg a retailer to fulfill an order they've placed. Additionally, there is nothing that Stein Mart can state that will change what has happened in my order experience. No doubt they review and scrutinize every order cancelling those that are in essence losers to them. In my case they have declined to redeem their gift cards as well sending them back. We'll see what they do next... update to come.
