If you have ever been ripped off by a crooked, Georgia atttorney, do NOT bother filing a complaint with the State Bar of Georgia.
All you will get for your time and trouble is stress and aggrivation.
The State Bar of Georgia is NOT even a State Agency. They are an Association of lawyers, by lawyers a for lawyers.
99% of the Time, they will find for the crooked lawyer. Even, in the rare instance, they do find for the citizen, that offending attorney will only receive a slap on the wrist, then all is forgiven and forgotten.
MY STORY:
My husband and I are senior citizens on fixed income. We gave a crooked Georgia lawyer $2,000 retainer to handle a case against a negligent home inspector. After 8 weeks of this lawyer doing nothing, we asked for our money back. The lawyer said it was all spent in 6 weeks. His billing statement was a complete lie and he offered no proof of anything. He was also belligerent, unethical and abusive toward us.
We filed an Ethics Greivace with the State Bar back in Sept, 2013. After all the work we did, documents we sent, the Bar did absolutely nothing. They sent the complaint to the lawyer, and he just lied to them and they believed him - not use.
I tried to fight this all the way, but nothing was done. They minimized and distorted my complaint until it did not even resemble the original complaint I filed.
They gave our case to an 80 plus, good old boy, lawyer, who was more interested in retiring than handling our case. Despite all the efforts we put into the case, it went no where.
This is typical behavior for the State Bar of Georgia.
My husband and I also filed a Fee Greivance against this lawyer to try to get our money back. This is yet another sad joke on the citizens of Georgia.
If you read the fine print, YOU have to agree to be obligated to their decision, but the crooked lawyer does not.
When I sent in the twenty page plus report, in duplicate, first the director said she did not receive it. I sent it certified. I had to have the Atlanta postmaster physically go there to find it. It was on her desk all the time.
Then, the next day, it was sent to the offending lawyer. How, in just 1 day, could the State Bar of Georgia even read the 20 plus pages? The simple fact, is that they did not read it at all.
Why? Because they simply do not care.
The result of this was, the Bar refused to handle the fee greivance because I had taken this lawyer to court, and the judge was friends with the lawyer - so we lost. Another example of injustice here.
All of my arguments, with the Director of Fee Greivance Committee, fell on deaf ears.
One must realize, that the State Bar of Georgia is made up of Lawyers. When a citizen complains, they are complaining about a lawyer to other lawyers.
Guess whose side they are on? NOT THE PUBLIC.
In my opinion, the State Bar of Georgia is a disgrace. They are an air of respectability that is no more than a joke.
And that sad joke is on the citizens of Georgia, who had the bad luck to get cheated by a crooked lawyer.
Since lawyers, who are not ethical - are not punished by the State Bar, - they have nothing to worry about. They can lie and cheat their clients, and get away with it.
