Spirit Airlines, Inc Reviews

  • Oct 3, 2022

I purchased an upgrade from Spirit in advance. Its called the Bundle. The upgrade cost me $85. It included an extra room seat. My seat number was 11A. When I got to the airport, Spirit sent a different plane. 11 A was now just a regular seat.

The flight was full. I wrote to Sprit for the refund of $85 and they said that I took the flight so I am not entitled to the refund. They changed the aircraft so I paid for something I did not get.

Do Not ever pay for upgrades in advance. Spirit Airlines is dishonest and will steal from you too.

Spirit Aurlines Spirit airlines denied me my emotional support animal when I got to the airport even though my printed boarding pass said that I would be traveling with an emotional support animal. I submitted all the documentation that they asked for, I thought she was able to go.

I was 1000 miles from my home and they force me to either delete videos that I had taken or they were kicking me off the plane and leaving me stranded in Florida. I ended up deleting some of the video and paying $110 to be able to get home. So much for someone who has anxiety. Fort Lauderdale Florida

I'm sure this has happened to plenty of other EX- Spirit Customers, but I want to complain out loud instead of just being embarrassed and bitter by myself.

I signed up for a trial of their "$9 Fare Club" and saved a whopping $18 on the complicated ticket I then bought. Unfortunately I let Spirit.com record my credit card on their website.

The flight itself was a typical Spirit Air NIGHTMARE experience with cancelled flights etc. I had to make a claim with the travel insurance company (thank goodness I had bought that), and eventually I did get some of my money back. Needless to say, I vowed never to fly on Spirit again.

I was too distracted to notice when Spirit charged my credit card $69.95 for a full year of the "Club". THEY GAVE ME NO NOTICE WHATSOEVER that they would, or did, make this charge! That is what enrages me the most. Who does that?

BUT then a year later, another charge for $69.95 appeared, again with no notice. This time I was all over it, and cancelled, but it was too late for this year. They were quick to point out they have a "No refund, and no proration" policy.

I WAS NOT ABLE to remove the credit card from the website, so I reported fraud to the card company and got the number changed.... so HOPEFULLY this will not happen again.

Anyway, finally, I think I am completely through with Spirit.

Beware!

I called a week before my flight to arrange to take a bike. It was difficult to understand what the assistant was saying, but I thought I'd paid $75 for the bike. I also had to pay $50 for an extra bag, and $13 for the seat.

That is a total of $272.29 for a one-way flight from Portland PDX to Las Vegas. When they told me about the extra $75, I just walked away. I'll avoid Spirit in future.

The complaints page https://www.spirit.com/complaints.aspx doesn't exist any more.

Like many people we live conservatively. Celebrating our anniversary is generally a thoughtful card, some super market flowers and a restaurant one step up from our go to Long Horn or Olive Garden. This year marked our 25th and we decided to celebrate in a more memorable way. Our plans for a romantic cruise were curtailed by family commitments. After reading some travel blogs and discussions with friends we settled on a long weekend in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. We requested the time out of work which in my wife’s case this meant working extended shifts before and after our trip. I carefully planned out each of four days at a beautiful resort with options for shows, dining and great activities.

Spirit Airlines was the only choice offering direct flights from Boston/Providence that I could find. While we had a bad experience previously with Spirit the difference of 3 hours of travel each way enticed us to try them one more time. Online booking was standard for Spirit, individual charges for everything; booking, seat choice, carry-on bags, a drink of water, oxygen (just kidding). We had a 5AM flight which would land us at 7AM so we would enjoy the entire 1st day. I called ahead and the resort agreed to get us in for early check-in … Spa treatments, good to go, or so I thought.

To make our 5AM flight we had to leave home around 3AM. I took one last look at my computer before going to grab a couple of hours of sleep and saw that at 10:30PM they sent an email stating that our flight was delayed and would not leave until 1:39PM, A NINE HOUR DELAY! The email stated “We hate running late as much as you do”, I really doubt that is true. I called the airline and spoke with a representative who apologized and said that the plane was grounded for a maintenance issue, but we should still get to the airport at 4AM just in case they get it resolved. Our plan now changed from a day by the pool with umbrella drinks to sitting in the airport for the entire day.

Left with few options our son dropped us off and we stood in a horrible line of equally unhappy customers for two hours. When we finally get to the front of the line we check our bags and the counter representative explains that the plane is stuck in South Carolina due to weather. WEATHER! , what about Maintenance which I was told 4 hours ago? I went on to say that it has been flawlessly spectacular in both locations by all reports and that NO other flights were delayed coming from or going to that location. The representative rolled her eyes, spun her computer monitor around and said “all I can tell you is what my screen says”.

She went on to offer me a refund, but there were no other flights to get there before 5PM anyway. Fast forward this nightmare to Noon, when my wife is enjoying our anniversary weekend sleeping in a chair by Starbucks. They call us to the gate to announce that the flight is delayed coming in from South Carolina and “may not arrive” due to Airport Construction!!! I am now enraged and only focused on containing myself as not to be arrested by TSA.

So how does the story end? You would not believe it, or perhaps you would. The plane lands and the incoming flight crew comes off at the gate. I chat with one of them who tells me that they were unhappy getting stuck in Myrtle Beach the night before. As it turns out our original flight was nearly empty so rather take us on an empty plane they lied to us, canceled it and doubled up our flight with the next one. We paid for a lost a day at our resort, our rental car and worst of all one of our four days. Spirit Airlines Purposely made us spend an entire day at an airport gate awaiting a plane that was never planned to come in. We were LIED to not once (Maintenance), not twice (Weather), but three times (Airport Construction) only to be enlightened by the flight crew that keeping us there was the plan all along. Sure, unforeseen things occur and stuff happens, but having no integrity and lying to customers is simply bad business.

Well, there it is, another in a long line of bad Spirit Airlines stories (just go look all over the internet). Now it is up to you. If you choose to fly with Spirit you may get what you do not deserve.

I took a flight from Detroit, MI to Las Vegas in June 2018. The flight to Vegas was far from pleasant but relatively uneventful. On the return flight, upon landing back in Detroit, it became apparent that my luggage was missing. The Spirit personnel in Detroit assured me that if I had to purchase necessary items while they located my suitcase, that I would be reimbursed.

I called them every day and eventually called the airport in Las Vegas every day as well. Their webisite states that if you are looking for reimbursement, you must have receipts. I did a great deal of footwork locating receipts and when I was able to submit receipts for the majority of my missing items (after 28 days without my luggage), SURPRISE! SURPRISE!

My luggage showed up! However, it was missing approximately half of my belongings. I was not claiming that my suits were Chanel or anything; in fact, I purchased them all on sale and the receipts showed that! A couple of weeks after I received my luggage and resubmitted for the missing items, I received an email from Spirit Airlines, saying that they had decided that they would not reimburse me for anything!

Not a single item, receipt or no receipt! I will NEVER fly Spirit again and as an employee of a company who deals with the public all day every day, I will do my utmost to convince anyone else to make the same decision.

Booked trip through Expedia (big mistake). I originally selected Delta but Expedia switched airlines on one leg of trip with Spirit Airlines because Expedia said Spirit was cheaper.. I arrived at the gate with a carry on (that fit easily above in plane).

That's when at the gate they told me I had to pay $65 for a carry on?? Who has heard such a thing? This pathetic airline and its representative forced me to pay the $65... I'll never fly on Spirit again-

they are extremely deceptive in how they advertise their fares.. and shame on Expedia for participating in Spirits pricing scheme.

On 12/30/18 we were flying from Ft. Lauderdale to Boston for a wedding. We arrived over an hour ahead of time (other people in the terminal we spoke to were there for over 2 hours) Spirit was so unprepared to handle the mass of people at the Ft. Lauderdale terminal that we, along with many of the people we were in line with, missed our flight. We had to purchase a flight from another airline to fly to Boston.

On the way home we learned that Spirit canceled our return flight because we missed the flight to Boston. We were never told that was thier policy and that we had to call to confirm the return flight. They made us purchase the reutrn flight again (probably the same seats we originally bought). When I called to complain and ask for a refund they said nothing could be done, that it was my fault, priceline's fault, etc.

THIS IS THE WORST AIRLINE IN THE HISTORY OF FLYING. I WOULD RATHER TAKE A CAR RIDE WITH SOMEONE PUKING THIER BRAINS OUT THE WHOLE TRIP THAN FLY ANOTHER SPIRIT FLIGHT.

I tried to cancel several times and several days, to cancel the membersip past week, following their instructions at their website and could not find a section where I could cancel my membership. Why does the government allow this practice? I called their tel. number posted several times and follow the recorded instruction just to get frustrated because they always refer me back to my membership account. I think this is a scam. I hope the BBB is aware of this and report it to the media or prosecute the company,

I flew with Spirit in 2017. 8 months later, I get a $69.95 charge from a "Spirit Visa." I don't even have a card through them, and I definitely didn't authorize the charge. If you fly with them: Be warned and ask about any sort of fees, because they have tons of hidden fees. I talked to a customer service person who said she'd refund the money, but we'll see. It's a holiday weekend, so it might take awhile to get back into our account. It's inconvenient and underhanded to charge for something 8 months after a flight when we didn't sign up for anything at all.

  • May 15, 2018

I used this airline 2 years ago, they offer a discount in luggage if I paid 9 usd, but they do not tell you that they will charge every year $69.95. Companies should not be allowed to charge this kind of fees. They are so fraudulent that they do not have a phone to call to solve this. I will not use this airline ever again.

  • Feb 5, 2018

When you go on their webiste and pull up your account, they say you can cancel the "automatic membership of 69.00" in the 9.00 fare club, but they won't refund your money to your credit card. They also don't erase your credit card # or account information. They don't tell you they automatically do this when you sign up either or that it's nonrefundable. It's a scam that a major airport would have such an airline doing things like this to get money.

Was charged $137 extra for taxes and fees at the rental car counter even though rental car was already paid for as part of the vacation package.

I made a reservation on Spirit one year ago. They asked me to pay $9 to join their "Spirit Club", which gives you certain benefits. First of all, they overcharged me for the ticket. Second, I never used the ticket at all. Now, a full year later, without any notification, and having not heard from them ever again, they charged $69.95 to my credit card, apparently, for my "new" year's membership. At no time was I aware of this rule. It was not mentioned on their webpage, or I never would have joined at all. They have no live Customer Service. If you call them you are lost in voicemail Hell. There is nowhere on their website to cancel this membership. I am going to have to cancel, what is my principal credit card to get rid of this company. DO NOT JOIN SPIRITS "SPIRIT CLUB". I have never heard of a national company resorting to such unprincipled practices. I am reporting them to my State Attorney General. If a lawyer who wants to start a class action suit is out there, this would be a good one to start.

I purchased a round-trip ticket from Philadelphia to Atlanta for $204.95. I was not aware of the additional fees, which included $45.00 each way for ONE carryon and a minimum of $16 each way for ANY reserved seat. As a result, the hidden fees nearly doubled the cost of my ticket. In my opinion, while this may be legal, it borders on fraud. At a minimum, it is bait-and-switch.

I was browsing the internet and found an airplane ticket from Los Angeles to Portland with a favorable price. I booked the travel. The outbound flight went fairly smooth. I could not bring any suitcases neither small or large or there would be a $50 per bag fee. You are encouraged to join the $9 club for a reduced price on the bags. The $9 club costs $59 dollars to join...first alert to scam.

The return flight went bad. The flight from Portland to LA was scheduled at 5:38pm. At 6:29 am I received an email that the flight would be delayed from 5:38 to6:47...now what airline knows at 6:30 am that their 5:30pm flight will be delayed?? Then at 7:08 got an email that flight will be delayed from 5:38 to 7:47 all they are doing is inching the actural new departure time upward, likely trying to take the 5:38 passengers to the 8:26 flight to help fill up the airplane...they are just playing with you and dont care about you being where you need to go ontime. Then at 9:11am got an email saying flight delayed from 5:38 to 8:26...all of this is untruthful scammary.

Now I arrive at the airport in Portland at 3:30pm to see what exactly was going on ..I received no additional emails the last email was at 9:11am.

Now the preson at the Spirit ticket counter says that the flight at 8:26 was cancelled, there are no Spirit flights at all leaving Portland on the day of the flight. You will have to wait until tomorrow. I asked why was the flight cancelled? The ticket person says "because of weather in Los Angeles". I showed her my cell phone with the Los Angeles weather on it saying 57 degrees and cloudy. She says we cant fly becuase of weather. Now they are lying to the customers. This completes the business fraud in this transactions with their intention to deceive the customers.

I rebooked on Alaska airlines. The first words fromt he pilot upon take off is "its a great flying day" we just got in from San Diego and we can tell you that it will be a smooth flight to Los Angeles.

Spirit is a fraud. They lie to the customers. The all of a sudden cancel flights. The appearance is that they only want to fly when the plane is totally full.

They will take great pains to deceive the customer.

They refuse to themselves put you onto another airling.

Spirit has bad consumer and bad business practices.

Spirit Airlines does honor their tickets even when you purchase their so called insurance along with the ticket.

I was delayed on an Avianca flight from Cali to Medellin,Colombia on Dec 27th. As a result I was late and missed my connection back to the US. I assumed that like all other airlines that they would book me on another flight and not leave me stranded in a foreign country. WRONG !!! I was told there in Medellin that I missed my flight and would therefore have to purchase another ticket. The insurance that I had purchased along with the ticket was worthless, sure because it is just another way SPIRIT rips people off like all of the carry on baggage charges that other airlines do not charge or charging you $5 for a coke or $9 for a snack in flight. This airline nickels and dimes their passengers for everything.

Well with no ticket at the time I ended up staying in Colombia with my wife for a few more weeks and flew home via American Airlines. Spirit airlines has no customer service as far as I am concerned and should never be used by anyone. This is without a doubt the worse excuse for a business in the world.

We all know that delayed flights are common and for Spirit to refuse to honor a ticket due to a flight delay is outrageous.

their so called low fares are a joke, add $55 for a carry-on and $15 each way for a drink and a snack and the cost of the ticket is not low. In fact other airlines will be a much better bet and they will not leave you stranded in foreign countries.

I think that about says it all. Other Airlines Will Not Leave You Stranded Anywhere.

Flew with Spirit in 2016, a year later they charge me 70$ for some kind of membership. I know i did not sign up for anything that would charge me 70$ a year later. They will not refund. Working with bank to get the charge reversed.

We had a severely negative experience with this airline, one that could have been avoided altogether had they simply not been so greedy as to lie to our faces in order to prevent us from cancelling our flight. This is where the trouble began:

We were scheduled on a Red-Eye flight from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We had one connecting flight in Las Vegas. The day we were set to leave, I received notification that our outgoing flight was delayed while our connecting flight was on time. The outgoing flight, in fact, was so severely delayed that there was no possible way we would be able to make our connecting flight. Concerned, I first called the airline directly to see if they could arrange an alternative route that would still get us into Fort Lauderdale the following morning. Unfortunately, there were no other viable options. We were told we could either take the flight to Las Vegas and see what could be done for us there, or cancel the trip and receive full reimbursement. We did not want to take the chance on being stuck in Las Vegas, so we opted to book a flight with another airline and cancel the flight with Spirit for a full refund.

Surprisingly, Spirit air refused to cancel our trip and reimburse us over the phone. They insisted that we could only do this at the airport, in person. I must have argued with them and begged and pleaded that they just cancel the flight over the phone for 30 minutes, but they refused and insisted we cancel at the airport. Finally, I relented and said that we would do as instructed, but before hanging up I asked for assurance that the airline would indeed cancel and refund the trip without penalty. We were assured that this would be the case.

So, we play their game and get to the airport, arriving early so as to give us a large window of time in which to wait in line and cancel out our flight. At the ticket kiosk, we presented our boarding passes, explained the problem, and requested a cancellation and refund. We were then told that no refund would be given because, as it so happened, all flights were now on time and we would be able to make our connecting flight. We were perplexed as to how a flight which, only moments ago, was delayed for over an hour could suddenly now be on time. They explained that the plane had been switched out and everything was fine. Still, we were shaken by the earlier delays and we expressed concern that the flight might somehow again be delayed, so we again requested the cancellation and full refund. A supervisor was brought out to speak to us. He heard our concerns, we told him that we had a separate flight with another airline all set to go and that had no delays, and we wanted to cancel out the Spirit flight and take the separate flight since we felt safer going with the other airline. He reassured us, over and over again, that our flight was on time and would not possibly be delayed. He expressed full confidence that the plane would go out on time and there was nothing to worry about. Moreover, as the flight was scheduled to go out on time and there was no delay, the best he could offer us was a credit towards Spirit airlines good for 60 days only. No refund whatsoever.

We then asked him what would happen if our flight suddenly got delayed and caused us to miss our connecting flight, and this is where he blatantly lied to our faces: he told us that if that should happen, the connecting flight would wait for us. He insisted that the connecting flight would be held and would not leave without us. Feeling somewhat better due to his confidence and his insistance that no plane would leave without us, we agreed to keep the Spirit flight and we cancelled the backup flight we had set up with the other airline.

Long story short, not only was our flight delayed, the connecting flight would not wait an additional 15 minutes which is all that would be needed to just make our connection. Our flight would literally be touching down in Las Vegas about 15 minutes before the connecting flight was scheduled to take off. We begged and pleaded that they hold the connecting flight a little while as was promised to us to no avail. We were told that we would miss our connecting flight and the most that Spirit would do for us was cancel our trip and refund us (which is what we had originally asked for, many times, in the first place). To our chagrin, it was too late to try to make the flight with the other airline as the airport was close to shutting down. Had they just let us do what we had wanted to do when we first approached them at the airport, we would have made our trip and disaster would have been avoided altogether. Due to their greed, they preferred to lie to our faces in order to prevent us from cancelling our flight with them. I will never fly with them ever again and I strongly encourage others to do the same.

They advertise and imply that trip interruption insurance covers all kinds of Contingent situations like lost bags, hotel car rental, etc. It only covers airfare, and even then the airlines refund airfare when trip interruption occurs due to weather. Totally useless insurance, dont be fooled. Also claim limit is 85 dollars.

My flight was scheduled to leave at 7:50 am for Houston- I, along with about 5 other passengers, were at the desk at approximately 7:30 am to check in.

We were told that our flight had already left. The desk person said they had made an announcement that the flight was leaving early-not one of our group heard it!!

I have been trying to get a refund since early May-no deal-I paid $256.60 for my flight which includes my $75 baggage fee. I emailed Chuck at the airline asking for a refund. After weeks of "I'm sorry you had to wait" they offered me a full ticket which I refused-I simply want my MONEY!

I mean, I do NOT want to fly with them again!!
