On December 1 2015 I dropped my son at the front doors of Sovereign Health not knowing that that would be the last time I would ever see him again. The story begins in October 2015. I received a phone call from A women asking if I had reached out for help for a drug or alcohol problem and I said I had called to get information regarding my son. She then asked if he had insurance and I said yes, he has Medicaid from the state and she immediately said, No he doesn't, not any more. She then told me that she could get him into the best treatment center in the country and all he would have to do is cancel his current insurance policy and she would get him on a policy through the company she works for. I was very hesitant because it was sounding like a hoax. She promised me that it was all ligitimate and I had nothing to worry about. She said she could have him in treatment on November 1 2015. She said that as soon as his insurance was canceled, he could be in treatment the following month. I wasn't able to get the insurance canceled until the following month and sure enough she called and said everything thing was arranged and they would send a plane ticketing for him to arrive on December 1st. I Said a plane ticket to where? She said they didn't know the location until the last minute. I said if its in California, I will just drive him. She then told me it was in San Clemente CA. On December 1 I gave my son a hug not knowing that would be the last time I would ever hug him.
I was told that Sovereign Health had a no contact policy for the first 30 days. He was supposed to be in treatment for 90 days. Well after a week and a half I received a call from my son and he said they gave him his phone back early. He then proceeded to tell me that the place was a complete joke. He said that he had access to more illegal drugs then he ever had on the street. He said that he didn't wasn't feeling good because of the medication he was on. He said they prescribed him meds on the first day he got there. I said good then you have been seen by a doctor and he said that he didn't see a doctor until a 4 days after he arrived. I asked him then who gave him the meds and he said I don't know, some lady. He said they were assigned a sober living home that they resided in and would commute to the "center " for group meeting and appointments. He said he was talking to a therapist and I asked if it was a psychiatrist and he said no just a therapist.
After three weeks he told me that he only had to go to the center part time. I asked him what would he do all day and he said "hang out ". At that point I was confused as to what kind of treatment he was getting. He told me that there would be days that they would conduct their own meeting because no one from the staff was available to run the meetings. Then in late January he asked me about getting him private insurance because he was being told that the insurance he had was about to run out. I said that he was supposed to be there for 90 days and said all he knew was that they told him he would have to find somewhere to go because he couldn't stay there.
On February 15 he was given a piece of paper, a certificate of completion, that was dated July 2015 thru August 2015 and signed on February 15, 2016. He didn't know what to do because he had no where to go and he knew he could come back home. He said he wasn't ready to leave and that he was scared. He found a ad on Craigslist for a room for rent and moved in with complete strangers. He was working two jobs to pay for the room and on April 19, 2016 I recieved a called from his father that he was dead from a heroin overdose. Sovereign Health promised to give him the tools and education he needed in order to live a drug free life and they did nothing except throw him out on the street in a unfamiliar place and have him fend for himself
