Smithfield Station Reviews

  • Nov 15, 2022

While passing through the Hampton Roads area my cousins and I decided to stop to visit the area for the day. After such a horrible visit at this tacky dive we will never come back to Smithfield again. We walked in to this restaurant from off the street to get lunch. It was not crowded at all. We had to sit and wait 20 minutes for a table for 4. The waitress did not even bring us water. She ignored us because there was not enough wait staff available. There were 4 other tables with people sitting at them. Everyone there was white. When we were talking and laughing people started to stare at us. When we made jokes in Spanish then the dirty looks from the patrons and waitress really started. We ignored everyone and waited some more with no water, no soda, no appetizers, crackers, bread, nothing. Finally the waitress came back and took our drink order. We ordered beer and one of us ordered a cocktail. The waitress took off again and did not come back for 15 minutes with the drinks. Finally she took our food order.

She treated us as though we are ghetto slum. My youngest cousin went to the bathroom and came back. She then told me in Spanish that she overheard a very old guy and a younger guy saying that we are the type of people who are going to dash out, keep an eye on us. A few minutes later the waitress told us that because we had more than 3 drinks for our table we needed to run a credit card. I asked why. We were not sitting at the bar. A table with a white family across from us had 6 people with 3 of the people there drinking liquor. I never noticed their credit card being taken.

I said to please cancel our food order and we would pay for our drinks in cash and then leave. The waitress went back to the bar where some fat old man was standing and whispered something. He quickly came over and threatened us that we were causing a disturbance on private property and that we needed to pay our bill and leave. We didn't finish our drinks. He said, "I don't want the likes of you people in here. This is not a cheap bar but a fine dining establishment and it is mine so you need to leave. You have 1 minute to get up before I call the police." As we headed down the steps to walk out the police were ready and waiting with big grins on their faces. We were not drunk or causing a disturbance.

In this day and age I never would have thought I would have seen this type of behavior. I am glad that I did not spend more money here. Before the owners try to try to rectify this by prentending it never happened or claiming it is a fake story, it is very real. This did happen and we were treated horribly because we are of hispanic origin. Instead of welcoming and embracing us we were treated like scum. The only thing is that the people who you think are scum were buying drinks from this restaurant. We would have also bought food. About 30 minutes after we left this restaurant, another in a completeply different area welcomed us. Own up to the fact that you are a whites only establisment. When you go to try to cover this up then ask yourself how many of your staff are not white?

Since you appear to be the type of owner/owners that have to have the last say then please comment on why you allow this to go on? Do not try to cover it up and claim it did not.

threw a $20 bill on the table. We did not finish our drinks. All of us got up and we did speak to each other in Spanish. Oh, I apologize that I am Mexican/American and I can speak another language perfectly. We had barely gotten out the door and at the bottom of the steps were 2 white police officers. We kept walking and they stopped us and said, "We received a call about loud behavior in here!!!! You are not welcome to return here ever again!!!
