$699 phone will cost $1400 - plus lied about contract

this is the exact same thing that happened to me. I bought a $699 phone - this was going to be $93 a month for 24 months and for both my current plan and the phone- turns out the $93 a month is just for the phone for 15 months - the phone will be $1400 when i am done paying for it.

the only difference is during making this purchase i did a live chat with someone throughout the purchase proccess - I did not trust them and so I continually made a point to say that I did not want 2 bills and that i was paying 34.74 a month for 24 months+ $45 for current plan. then when it came time to actually submit the order the total came to $93 which is a higher total. He then told me that was because my bill was due in a week and it was pro rated and i was also paying for the remainder of the month and that my bill would actually be LESS after the first one......I have EVERYTHING in writing and will be pursuing the matter....... I called both straight talk and smart pay to fix this and straight talk refused to give me an email address (i want to keep every conversation in writing) and smart pay gave me an email address. - i looked up every email address to both straight talk and smart pay i could find and sent an email along with chat transcripts to all of them - so far no answers or responses.

My name is Diana Cabrera Stewart- ***-***-5251- account. Straight talk refused to fix my defective phone which the phone is covered under insurance. Customer service told us that they did not want to help us I am leasing a Samsung Galaxy S8+ with Straight Talk. I have had this phone and paid in this phone for 2 months. I also purchased the phone protection plan.

The phone started having screen problems. I called Straight talk and they told me that they could not help me and to call Smart Pay.Smart Pay is the company that the phone comes from. So I called Smart Pay and they told me they couldn't help and to call the manufacturer. I called Samsung and they told me that sense the phone is under Straigh talk and Smartpay, they wont fix it. So I call Smartpay again and the lady pretty much told me that Im stuck with this defective phone and there's nothing they can do.

I mentioned our insurance and she just changed the subject quickly. They she hung up on me. I called back and the same thing happened. I called 5 times and went through the same thing with them. No help and told that I have to pay for a defective phone. This is crazy. This is so crazy.

Smart Pay

What a total scam. SmartPay tried to push through my monthly payment 14 days before the due date. Then 7 days before my service date for Straight Talk was do. I'm on a fixed income so these charges coming in 2 weeks and 1 week before they were scheduled play total havoc on my bank account and my ability to pay my bills.

Beware! Your lease or new smart phone purchase from MetroPCS or whomever WILL cost you way more than you think.

Here's what they lead you to believe...

If you pay off your lease in the first 90 days, you will only pay the actual advertised price of the phone (which in my case was $499 for a Samsung Galaxy S6 on 3/20/17).

Here's what you actually pay...

$499.00 SmartPay's "purchase price" NOT the cash price advertised by the cell phone service provider.

$99.80 Instant add-on to cash price by SmartPay to create your new inflated "cash price" that no one tells you about.

$241.47 SmartPay's early pay off "fee" that no one tells you about.

TOTAL PAID WITH EARLY PAY OFF PLAN: $718.56 NOT the $499 cash price advertised by the cell phone service provider.

That's an extra $219.56.

Most other special financing deals allow you to pay off the purchase amount within a specified time frame and pay ONLY the purchase price on your receipt such as Amazon, PayPal, CareCredit, etc. This is what you expect and this is what the sales people lead you to believe.

Therefore, I'm putting SmartPay on blast as a RIPOFF company trying to get over on their customers. F _ _ _ SmartPay and all the companies that use them. Offer a true special financing program for people with good credit like myself. Why even run my credit history if you're gonna offer such shady terms.

I picked out a phone on the straighttalk website and it had options for payment; $599 in full, or I can lease through SmartPay at $27.43 a month for 24 months. (In fact, the offer is still on the Straighttalk website) I chose the lease.

My first charge was $81. My email receipt showed that my $45 a month Straighttalk plan was a part of the deal, so I figured the $27 lease plus my $45 plan plus a couple of bucks in fees made the $81. No problem. But then Straighttalk still took $45 out of my bank account too. So I contacted straighttalk and stopped my autopay, since my plan is now being paid through SmartPay.

I made two $81 payments and then SmartPay charged me $139 the next month. I called. They said that my lease payment was $81 a month and they charged me an additional $45 for my phone service (81+45=126) and that total was $139 and they were going to keep charging me $140 a month for the rest of lease, making my $500 phone cost $2,085...

The lease plan I agreed to was $27.43 a month for 24 months, which totals $658. I did not agree to pay $140 a month for 15 months. That's a bait and switch.

I discovered the hard way that if you decide to return a phone you "leased", you must wait 10 days for them to "process" the return. Which means that if your next payment is due during that 10 days return processing time, you must STILL MAKE THE PAYMENT even though you've already returned the phone and no longer have it in your possession! That's right! You must still make the FULL PAYMENT even if you have already returned the phone and they have received it! They DO NOT pro-rate the payment and return the difference as you would think is the right thing to do!

So you must time the return to account for those 10 days processing time so you return it to them before your next lease payment. Which also means that you will be without that phone and the use of that phone for that 10 days processing time. But if you do that, then that still means that you will have already paid for the use of the phone but won't actually have use of it if you decide to send it early enough before you next payment is due.

Does this sound right?????

I ordered a phone for my Straight Talk service and, since I wanted to make payments instead of paying for it outight, I had to go through SmartPay. My phone was broken, so I needed the phone right away so I paid the extra $14.95 to get it "next day". I received an email, which was actually from StraightTalk instead of SmartPay, with my order ID and a link to track my order, so the next day, when I expected my order to be on its way to me, I attempted to track it and I received a message telling me that there was no such order. I called StraightTalk first and they referred me back to SmartPay, which is really strange to me considering they are only the financer and not where I purchased the phone, but they then referred me back to SmartPay. I called SmartPay and they said my order was "being reviewed" and that could take 24-48 hours! When I asked what on earth thhey would have to "review" she said that they had to "make sure StraightTalk can fulfill the order." So, 1 - why can't StraightTalk tell me about my order when they are the ones I purchased the phones from and the ones obviously fulfilling the order, 2 - why does an order have to be "reviewed" since they already have their money and shouldn't be selling phones that they cannot deliver, 3 - they are scamming people out of an extra $14.95 for "next day" deliver when they obviously cannot get it to you the next day if the order is in "review" for up to 2 days?!! Then, to add to this ridiculousness, they won't allow you to cancel the order!!

Basically, I'm stuck with a broken phone for who knows how long, when, had I known this, I would have just went to the store to get one so I could have it right away. It is not right for them to charge people for next day delivery when they know it's not going to be next day, and they also need to figure out a better system for taking orders and filling them so you're not shuttled back and forth between 2 companies. NOT good business andI will be sure to tell all my friends and family not to use them!

I will NEVER, buy another phone with SmartPay Lease again. I paid off two leases already... I did a new lease on May 24 for a new phone Samsung Galaxy S9+ my payment is $110.08 a month. which is supposed to include my phone and airtime. the phone was $829.99 and I got it for 15 months...Like $1006.00 when its paid off. Straight talk charged me $49.17 for airtime, on Saturday 6/9 and SmartPay tells me that my lease payment DOES NOT include my airtime payment. they are giving me BS! saying the difference is Taxes and Fees. I told customer service to do the math. $829.99 divided over 15 months is only a little over $55 she said the rest is Taxes and Fees!!! $55 in Taxes and Fees??? What bullsh*t I even received a confirmation email when I completed the lease, telling me that my lease was a bundled package and my 15 month lease payment included my air time but all SmartPay customer service says is "sorry dont know why you received that email" nothing we can do. cant change your agreement. What a crock of sh*t... yes I am mad. It's plain and simple math, obviously something they don't have to be able to do to work at SmartPay... which is scary seeing as they are a leasing company.

This place is nothing but a RIPOFF!!! I returned their product on March 8th after having it for 2 months because the phone was overheating and it was too expensive. I was suppose to receive a refund within 5 to 7 business days but nothing and when I call they keep telling me 1 too 2 more business days. They got their crappy phone but they are not refunding my money. STAY AWAY FROM THEM THEY ARE CROOKS!!!

We bought an iphone 7s from Metro PCS in December. We have excellent credit. The sales clerk suggested instead of putting it on charge card , use "SMART PAY". We could make payments over a period of time, no interest auto withdraw from our checking. We received no follow up paperwork or emails from Smart Pay . I went to the email address on my bank statements to see what i owed and noticed it is leasing the phone with 11 payments! I called them and was told I had 90 days to pay it off since I didn't pay it off last week I now get 20% added , have to make the 11 payments and now my $669 phone will be costing me $1139 Superviser said she could'nt alter the computer since it had already "rolled over" SMART PAY REAlly i SAY smart scam.

August 16, 2016 I went to Walmart at White Horse Rd. Greenville, S.C. to buy 2 Samsung Galaxy phones. I was going to get them thru Smart Pay but only one phon e went thru, ( they said I was the first person to use Smart Pay since it was setup. )so I told the person who was setting it up to cancel the lease if only one was going thru. So I bought both phones with my Walmart Credit Card. Smart Pay charged my Capital One credit card $91.45 on 9-12-16. I went back to Walmart talk to the Manager she called Smart Pay told them what happened.

I didn't hear from them again till 12-29-17, I got a call from 864-251-5830 the person said she was in my area delivering claims papers & I needed to call 1-866-894-9615 ( ext. 446 -10 ) she didn't say who it was & when I called they didn't say who they were either. I thought it was AT&T. So I paid them $574.04. ( the next day I got a call from AT &T I told that person I already paid them he said I didn't , that's when I figured it out. ) I called Smart Pay back they won't give me my money back. I asked the lady what was I suppose to do pay the phone twice. She got sorta smart about it.

I seen thru straight talk that I could order a new phone thru payments thru smartpay lease which I thought was great till I was approved n 2 days later they claimed fraud on my account.. I am out $246.04 for a phone I will never receive which is crap. I have called over 5 times about this they claim I haven't been billed that seeing my bank statement that i was never charged well the money is gone so where did it go. Everytime I call they give me a different excuse. I would never recommend this company as a way to lease a phone I know that now.. I have learned my lesson.

  • Jul 27, 2017

MetroPCS said lease too expensive so just buy. Billing states "1 of 12" for $50.64 when cell is just over $50.

  • Jul 6, 2017

They pulled out $130.77 for the first month, and then pulled out $120.04 a couple of other months, and $75.00 was to be applied to the phone, and $45.00 to the phone services. Which they applied to someone else's account so they refused to reimburse me, plus i had no phone service until I purchased a card from Walmart for $45.00. Not once but twice! Straight talk would only switch the services once and said the leasing company needed to fix this. Every time I called i would speak to someone from not in our country who said they had sent this to their upper management which would take 24 to 48 hours which remind you, I had no service for over 12 days until I paid out of my pocket again. I have been blamed for giving them some number in another state which I have never lived in and have had this number for years. I work for a hospital and having surgery and this is the only form of communication which has caused me nothing but heartache. I called again and they said they were going to keep taking my money until phone is paid. Let them know I no longer want this phone and they still have not sent me a return label so I can send this back to them. I am beyond furious and feel they have stolen my money since I have nev r had any phone services. I really need to know how they can be stopped.

I purchase a device online through smartpay lease. When i received the device in the mail. I called the number and provided the pin number it did not work. I had to pay extra double payment to my carrier in order for me to redeemed the service. My service got disconnected and i called smart pay and paid another payment and provided with pin number that is still not working with my carrier to redeemed the service again. I have not had the service for over 2 weeks since i made last payment to smartpay. I moved to different carrier and paid off for device to smart pay. The pin number provided by smart pay never worked. Smart pay still owed me money worth 2 months service plan that i was never having. I will have to request my bank to issue me the refund. It is a nightmare and it is ongoing issue that has not been reserved yet.

I was misled into believing that I was signing up for a lease to own after 1 year plan. After 1 year of owning this device, I threw it away because it was outdated assuming I was about to pay it off. I was wrong, I got a message a few months later saying I owed hundreds of dollars and my account was about to go to collections. The payments kept coming even after the one year. I tried contacting the company. I called multiple times and nobody in customer service had any idea what I was telling g them or what to do. Finally someone told me to email a letter explaining the situation and they would tell me what to do. At one point they said I have to file a police report for a lost device. I'm still stuck making payments and have paid for the device many times over. This is the worst company I've ever dealt with and it has taken up far too large a part of my life.

Purchased a phone that retails at 120.00 the misleading interest fees and other fees lead me into paying a total cost of 320.00 for a phone it's a lease to own plan with they hide behind by emphasizing your just leasing it rather than paying a loan as with most creditors. This seems almost criminal to do to people and the must be stopped they are preditors the prey on one of the biggest markets cell phones when most people go into these cell phone shops such as metro PC's the up sale you on cell phones and if you don't have the money they make it all to simple to buy now pay later with one of these plans they enroll you in the store and if you don't see the fine writing that's very misleading you become a new victim

  • Feb 25, 2017

I purchased a phone and plan using the Smartpay Lease option on Straighttalk.com. They automatically charged my account $135.99. I returned the phone back to them and they only refunded me for $49.35 and still owe me $86.64 which I can't seem to get back and they won't cancel my account so that I will no longer get charged. I have called multiple times and keep getting promised that they are escalating my issue but I never receive emails regarding the escalation and nothing ever happens. I just want my money back and the lease closed. I have proof of the return and the proof that it was delivered to their facility. I also have proof from Straight Talk that the phone was returned.

I first contacted Smartpay through my mobile provider, Net10. Net10 offered the possibility of getting a new mobile and paying over time for it. I wanted a new phone and jumped on the opportunity to do so. Their pay over time program is through Smartpay. I was originally promised a period of 1 year, with a payment of 133.14. In total that amounts to $1597.68 That amount has been paid in full in 12/7/15

After that year, now Smartpay is charging a monthly amount of 59.05 I was mislead to think that after a year of payments that would surely cover the cost of the phone, I would not have to continue to pay and that the phone would be mine. That is not the case. I will have to pay another 2 years of $59.05 amounting to $1417 on top of the $1597.68 which has already been paid. I would like to prevent others from being trapped into this payment plan such as I was.
