My co-driver and I were promised average of $1500 a week with a minimum of $1,200 per driver to drive as a team hauling D.O.D. loads and other hazmat. That was until my co-driver and I commit to going to orientation.
The day we received flight and hotel confirmation, SLT sent out a revised email stating that my co-driver and I will earn $150 per day ($1050 per week each) until we had our 172 page SF86 security clearance applications filled out and sent into their office (not a secured location). After committing to the said $150 per day guaranteed pay, we discovered that $55 of that amount was per diem which the company counted as untaxed wages. So basically we were earning $95 a day or $665 per week!
We sat in our truck away from home every week while being back charged for idle time in 100 degree+ temperatures. My team driver and I were sent on solo driver loads or loads that were less than 1,000 miles and spent half our time at shippers and receivers without layover or detention pay all the while hauling toxic waste.
We were issued our tractor/truck on July 14th with less than 25 miles on the odometer. We turned our truck in a month later with 9,500 miles. We expected 3,000 miles a week.
We were originally lead to believe that bonuses would make up the initial pay discrepancy. However, we were later told that they would not be available until 90 consecutive days of employment and only after our security clearance was processed - that was also a lie.
One team in our orientation class had been doing D.O.D. loads for years and already had their clearances. However, when they began with SLT, the company paid them $95 per day anyway and lied about getting them into a lease truck! On that account, there are too many discrepancies between what SLT advertises and what is really going on behind the lines to report in one message.
To make a long story short, we were lied to and cheated out of money by working for this company even in the short time we were there. My co-driver and I cleaned out the truck right before our scheduled home time.
We did not have the opportunity to give our official notice of intent to resign before receiving a phone call the very same day from an office manager. The office manager told us we were terminated and that our final paychecks would be used at their unaccountable discretion to cover travel expenses, etc. and to use however they sought fit which only added insult to injury. Experienced drivers, consider yourself warned.
I worked for SLT for a year-and-a-half. You receive your daily pay for every day you are not on home time; the per-diem is simply the untaxed portion of the pay...YOU STILL GET $150/DAY!. You get this amount if you drive 500 miles, 50 miles, 5 miles or ZERO miles! No, you do not get detention or layover pay, YOU GET $150/DAY SALARY!.
I spent 8 days in a hotel in Cheyenne, WY while my truck was at Freightliner. Unlike many other companies, that only pay $40-50/day for breakdown (after a 24 hr. waiting period), SLT paid the hotel and I received my salary each day I was broke down. I hauled a load into Tacoma, WA that delivered on Friday and my load out was scheduled for Monday...I spent Friday night at my grandmothers in Tacoma, Saturday and Sunday at my mothers in Seattle, and was still paid my salary, since I was not on home-time.
SLT understands that they are paying for your time. If a company is unable to find you a load for 4-5 days, why should you suffer? As an OTR driver, it is just as difficult sitting at a truck stop all weekend as it is to drive that whole time (maybe even more so). Another advantage to SLT is that they understand what its like on the road. My DM was also a former driver and could give good recommendations on things to see, or a restaurant to try. They allowed off-duty driving so you could make a run to Wal-Mart, or if you could BT to a nearby mall and see a movie without them complaining about the few extra miles. Yes they do try to limit idling, but understand it may is necessary in extreme weather. But some drivers are idiots, the temp. can be a comfortable 68-72 degrees and their truck sits there idling.
As for the next driver complaining that the had 9,500 miles in a month but expected 3,000/week...if you drove 12,000 miles or only 1,200 miles, YOU ARE STILL PAID THE SAME!
Went to work on 7-13-15,was promised 1500$ a week as a cleared team,Goverment clearance. Was only paid 1050$ a week.95$ a day and 55$ per diem.Didnt know how to run a team, was dispatched on haz waste loads,CH Robinson loads, all max weight,40,000+.Office people rude, didn't know anything about the loads such as weight, del.dates and always changed del.timesStay away from them,if you fall for the lies you will be sorry,Biggest mistake I've ever made in my life, they are part of Swift teams group, what a joke. They make big money on haz waste loads and pay the driver pennies.Do the math, minimum wage pays more,Sorry place to work!
I've been working for secure land transport for over a year-and-a-half they do have internal problems but this company goes out of their way to help a driver continue his career I do not understand drivers that wants something for free I am a solo driver I get paid layover detention but there is somebody new in the office that prevents us we have to fight for attention and layover pay but the CEO and vice president has an open door policy all we do is call he reviews it and 99% of the time you get paid I don't know why this person in the office likes making his goat through all this problem but this is my honest opinion about this company I will fight to keep this job I will do what I can to help this company grow I am very happy with this company I do not understand why they have these internal problems but I'm a driver not an office person I think this company could do a lot better if they put a driver in charge of drivers but once again that is above my pay grade this company will help you grow and you can grow with this company
