I hired George Colon in early 2016 to work as a recovery coach for my son who was 21 years old. Myson had been to numerous rehabs and i thought that a sober companion/recovery coach would be a more effective tool to help him stay sober and start a new life. At out first meeting with George he came across as very knowledgeable and experienced. He said all the right things and we felt that we had made the right choice in hiring him.
After a few days we realized we had made the wrong choice. George was combative with not only us but with our son as well. He was not open to suggestions from us and was quite stubborn and rude to be honest. Our son kept telling us that George would tell him horror stories of growing up in rough neighborhoods and of being in jail.As far as being a sober companion,George was mediocre at best,,,and quite ineffective. He seemed to stay on his cell phone most of the time and paid little,if any, attention to our son. Our son told us that George would let him go in to stores unaccompanied,,which made me and my husband very nervous and angry to be honest. George did not seem to know the basics of his job. He fumbled attempts at drug testing our son and didnt know how to navigate his way around New York City. He told us that he would stay awake most nights to monitor our son, this was not the case. He routinely fell asleep and my husband and I were left to attend to our son.
We started asking others in the recovery field that knew George and they stated that he had been fired from numerous private sober living houses in the NYC area. One owner of a sober living in Park Slope said George was the most unqualified and inept sober companion/recovery coach he had ever met. Another owner stated that George let one of his clients walk into a drugstore by himself where the client shoplifted contraband and relapsed, while George was his sober companion.
i strongly plead with all to stay clear of George Colon when deciding to hire a recovery coach.
