Select Specialty Hospital Reviews

  • Aug 11, 2017

My dad was admitted into the hospital on June 1st 2017. He had pneumonia was coughing up blood and his oxygen levels were in the 60s. They sent him to ICU and on June 3rd they decided to put him on a vent. He called to tell me to get my mom and get up there right away. So my mom and I sped to the hospital. My dad was on the vent and sedated by the time we got there. It was very scary but glad they were taking care of him. He had been on the vent for 8 days total. My mom and I went to see him everyday. I even went twice a day. Finally he was off the vent but was having something called delirium. He made up stories and honestly believed them. He was still having delirium but was breathing much better and the pneumonia was clearing up. He was ready for rehab. He needed a heart catheterization but the heart dr wanted him stable first.

So we tried to pick a rehab place but my dad's insurance was pretty ridiculous and chose for us basically. They chose select specialties. We looked at the reviews on FB and it seemed like a pretty nice place. Plus my friends mom had literally just left there and was doing well. They transferred my dad there and the first day I was coming to see him after work and there were nurses running to his room. He fell out of the bed because he still had delirium and they left his bed rails down. They asked if he was ok and he said no someone tried killing me. He was confused but because he had a bypap on they said oh it probably cushioned his fall. And didn't give him an x ray or anything. I was mortified but took it as a mistale and they seemed truly sorry. So I let it go. My dad was getting better but they weren't doing any rehab and lacked giving him attention.

So my sister contacted the CEO. But after they met with the CEO my dad's health got worse. He was having a hard time breathing again and they didn't give him x rays to see if the pneumonia was gone. My dad was feeling nauseous and they didn't seem concerned. He wouldn't eat and they didn't care. The next day my dad was clearly in pain and told me he was going to die here. He told my mom the nurses told him he was going to die here but my mom didn't believe him. She thought he was still having the delirium. The night he told me he was going to die here he was grunting in pain amd the nurses kept saying he was just tired. He said he had a dream he died there. I told him dad no your not we are here for you keep fighting.

The next morning my dad was in distress. Couldn't breathe at all. They do an x ray and the pneumonia is back. My mom called me at work and I left right away to see him. By the time I got there he was on the vent again. It was at 100 percent. But his sensor said 84. I asked the nurse if that was normal and he says no and says he will have them put a new sensor on him. They keep changing it retaping it but it keeps getting worse. They try suctioning out his lungs but nothing is working. They say he needs to be sedated but his blood pressure is too low and they will need to do a pik line so they can give him meds to up his blood pressure and sedate him. They give him the pik line and then he gets worse. They can't get his oxygen to go up. He is reaching out for us and I hold his hand and tell him it's ok. But he can't talk while on the vent. They say he needs to go to ICU. Me my sister and my mom start freaking out and crying. We step out of the room to take this all in and next thing I know there's a code blue. They come running with a crash cart to my dad's room and don't say a word to us.

Finally 5 min later a nurse comes and says my dad went into cardiac arrest and has no pulse. 15 min later they ask what we want them to do there is still no pulse and cpr isn't working. They try another 5 min and then my mom yells just stop let him go. He is brain dead by now. We all screamed and cried. I am in tears typing this but the word needs to be out. Select Specialties is a death sentence. Do not send anyone here at all costs. My dad is gone. They called his pain and suffering being tired. The CEO defended them at all costs amd had an answer for eveything. Tried to reassure us he would be ok. Well if dead is ok then he was right. My family is beyond upset. I read another report that sounded exactly like my father's situation. They need to be stopped. Get the word out. Destroy this company! People's lives are on the line. My dad was my everything. He helped me with everything. He helped everyone. He was very active. He could out walk myself. It was not his time to go. He had many years left and they took that from him. And took our father/husband from us.
