In July of 2021, S&M Relo LLC. was contracted by Nationwide Moving Services (a broker) to move our possessions from Ohio to Florida. My wife and I did not contact this company, Nationwide assigned them to our move without prior notification. We found out this company is rated F by the Better Business Bureau and had an ongoing pattern of complaints against it including the U.S. Department of Transportation: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, The Household Goods Program; in which S&M Reloc LLC has had 41 complaints in 2020 - 108 in 2021 and so far 14 in 2022.
Nationwide has used the internet to scout out our moving situation including: home sale price, move out dates, and contractual mandates such as penalties for late move out, etc. They use this information to place unsuspecting and trusting people into a bind. We believe this to be their business model that attorneys and businessmen have created to profiteer as much money as possible from those consumers unfamiliar with the moving industry.
It is now obvious to us that S&M Relo LLC is tied with Nationwide Moving services, a broker for trucking/moving companies. Two days before our move scheduled for July 14, Nationwide sends an e-mail stating that a check should be made ready to S&M Relo LLC. The move would take place from 8 AM - Noon on the 14th. When July 14 comes we experience the following:
S&M Relo LLC: is the moving company assigned to our move by Nationwide Moving Services.
they are 3 hours late with only a 2 person crew and one recorder.
they have a box truck, not a moving van and can not move our classic car.
they more than double the price of the move.
the price per cubic foot is changed from $4.75 to $6.04.
the volume in cubic feet of the move is increased to 3000 cu.ft. from 2203.
our actual sq. footage is only 2500 cu.ft. Instead of a check for $6523.96 we are told we have to pay $13,418.56. We argue over the phone with people from both companies for 2 hours. Supposedly we speak with Steve Coburn, owner of S&M Relo who verbally guaranties we will be happy with their services and assures us that they do a great job.
Nothing could be furtherer from the truth! It takes over 2 days for this team of scabs to load our possessions. The team from S&M Relo will drag their feet until after midnight into July 16th. They do this on purpose to make sure the stress of the moment, combined with our travel plans, are crunched into a time period that does not allow for adjustments or protests to what they are doing. When you are at your wits end with them, you are presented with paper work to sign.
The “New” contract or as they call it “Bill of Lauding” has major significant changes that we will realize only later. These are:
-Estimated time of delivery from: 2 - 14 days, changed to 3 - 40 days! We will wait 6
weeks for our possessions!
-They will use shuttle service as a way to try and get more money out of us.
S&M Reloc demands $3000.00 more for shuttle services. No shuttle was necessary in our move. We have pictures of other moving vans in our neighborhood to prove this. Therefore, S&M will not drop off to 2 locations within a 10 mile radius for the same price, as stated in the Nationwide contract.
-They do not provide an estimate for insurance to cover the safe moving our possessions. If you think they are professionals and will handle your stuff with care, THINK AGAIN!
-Their contract has been carefully word crafted by lawyers and businessmen to say they can basically treat your possessions anyway they see fit and without care. (If you know how to read it and have the insightfulness to realize this!)
-Stated in the contract is : wrapping of all furniture with quilted moving blankets, yet many items were unwrapped, unboxed and therefore broken.
-The Nationwide contract also states: Itemized inventory indicating condition at origin. BUT, The recorder from S&M Relo has been taking their own inventory of our furniture, and unbeknownst to my wife and I; they have been secretly using numeric codes to represent our furniture as already scratched, dented or marred on their paper work so they are not responsible for any damages they will make to our possessions.
We purchased expensive, quality hardwood furniture and took great care of it, only to find the recorder for S&M Relo had characterized it as damaged and well used. We believe this is why they purposefully get behind schedule, and conflict with the customer’s travel plans so unknowing customers will be further deceived and sign paper work they have no time in which to realize it has indeed been falsified.
After 6 full weeks without our possessions they are scheduled for delivery in Florida but we we find the following:
Our furniture has been placed in a different moving van.
All furniture and boxes are haphazardly packed and many unwrapped and/or unprotected.
Boxes are stacked so high they have crushed down resulting in broken items.
Most every piece of furniture is marred, scratched, or broken.
2-TV’s and one entertainment unit are utterly destroyed, with some furniture items broken.
Artwork that they were contracted to pack and protect is destroyed.
16 boxes are received without their inventory numbers on them (as they were labeled at loading).
11 of our boxes are missing, lost or STOLEN!! Over $11,400 in possessions are missing!
There are pieces of other people’s possessions on the truck including: pictures, benches and artificial plants.
The men unloading the truck were subcontracted workers from another moving company, state: “we have never seen anything like this!”. They spend most of the day apologizing for this companies crime perpetrated against us.
My wife add I had to purchase additional 30 “Moving blankets” to protect our furniture at unload.
Prior to our moving experience my wife and I are constantly and consistently told by Nationwide Moving Services and S&M Relo LLC that we would be taken care of, pleased with their services and told that they are the professionals in the industry. What we have found is that these companies and their contract lawyers have perpetrated crime against us using “Bait and Switch” tactics, lies, deception, coercion and fraud.
We have missing and/ or stolen over $13000.00 in possessions, thousands of dollars in damaged and broken furniture. We received two smashed TVs, a smashed entertainment unit, scratched marred and broken furniture and crushed boxes with absolutely no customer service or communication from either company.
We have found that these companies have perpetrated crime against us using “Bait and Switch” tactics, lies, deception, coercion and fraud.
LOST or STOLEN boxes worth $11,412.00
DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR: $2,200.00
20 Furniture pieces in need of repair $5,000.00 est.
OVER-BILLED VOLUME 500Cu.Ft. $3020.00
Additional moving expenses to U-Haul caused by S&M Relo LLC: $716.00
TOTAL CLAIM $22,348.00
In December 2021 the FMCSA listed S&M Relo LLC with over 30 vehicles in there business. As of today they list only 11 ! We believe they are hiding assets due to the number of complaints against them and readying to file for bankruptcy. They are probably preparing to start another moving company and continue their abuse of the system.
