RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center at Carteret, Reviews

Back in 2011, i purchased an expensive "founders" membership prior to this fitness center opening in carteret, after which time i would only pay $35 a month, which was supposed to be substantially less than the average monthly membership of about $60 +/-. In the beginning, our schedule was filled with classes, great instructors, and member activities. As time went on, there were several changes in both general and group fitness management, and with each change the amount of classes offered and member activities was less and less, and the quality of some instructors was poor. Many of the original instructors had left and classes were either completely taken off the schedule or canceled because management did not find substitutes. Some members began leaving for different, lower-priced, gyms in the area, and others, including myself, began complaining about the drastic changes. The current general manager, suzanne rich, and group fitness manager, chris kurceski, couldn't be bothered listening to member's concerns and would actually get annoyed with and team up against the members. The two had worked together in the past so member's complaints went nowhere.
After a period of suzanne calling and emailing me and chris coming up to me in the middle of a workout asking how long i would be because suzanne wants to speak with me Except we never spoke because when i went to see her she was not available), suzanne ending up revoking my membership to all rwj fitness centers for very bizarre and outlandish reasons without providing any details or proof. When i tried to ask questions and obtain more information she would shut me down in an effort to get me out of her office as fast as possible. When i spoke via telephone to the hr director at the fitness & wellness company, i heard more slanderous accusations and when i told her she would need to produce some sort of documentation at some point, her response was "for what reason?" i'm guessing since they are a small organization, they can make up their own rules, moral or not, and can do what they please...After taking your money upfront. After a complaint was filed with the bbb for reimbursement of my initial large investment and also access to the other rwj fitness centers that were run correctly and had a good group fitness schedule, fitness & wellness, the company that operates the fitness centers on behalf of robert wood johnson hospital, refused my request but offered to let me sell my membership for $100. I guess they thought that i would want to #1 find them a new member To help out the sales team, since members are leaving with the gym not having much to offer, sales must be slow) and #2 have that new member possibly be subjected to the same bad treatment that i was. I declined. They did eventually refund my membership fee for the month that they did not allow me to use the gym but still charged me for.
The moral of the story here is, prior to joining a fitness center, find out who the managers are, and if its either of these individuals, go elsewhere. There is already a posted for suzanne rich the former owner and/or manager of 'lady of america' and another one for the rwj fitness & wellness center in hamilton which is operated by the same company, fitness & wellness professional services, as the one in carteret.
Otherwise, if you don't mind paying higher than average membership fees for a handful of classes, using yoga mats that were falling apart, showing up to the gym for a class to see a sign posted that its cancelled or finding a substitute instructor that has no idea how to teach that particular class, or putting up with attitude, eye rolling, and dirty looks when you bring up a concern or ask a question, or simply walk into the place, than this place is for you!
