I have been a loyal customer for nearly 4 years. The food is awesome and the service has always been friendly. A friend and I had lunch on September 1st. I had the lunch special, which totaled $11.68. I paid with my visa debit card. My friend paid and tipped our server with cash. As always, I placed a lined through the tip area on my receipt and wrote the total at the bottom of $11.68. My friend had already tipped the server in cash. My card was charged the $11.68 and I went about my day. I was shocked days later when my bank had updated the charge to $16.68. I knew this had to be an error. I figured I'd mention it on my next lunch visit, which was the same week.
Friday, I spoke with the manager Nile and asked if he could pull the original receipt and check it for errors. He pulled a copy from the register, which stated I had authorized a $5 tip on my credit card. I assured him I had not authorized a $5 tip, that in fact our server received her tip in cash. I asked for the original signed receipt for review. I was floored when he pulled the original signed receipt from his saved records. My original written total amount that I had written myself and signed was completely altered. Someone had written over my numbers and turned the $11.68 into $16.68.
It was clear as day that someone had doubled over the numbers and turned the 1 into a 6. I was horrified that this could happen. How could someone blatantly forge my receipt. The owner explained that it must've been a mistake. A mistake? "But sir, I placed a strike through in the tip area and I myself wrote the total before I signed this receipt" this receipt was completely altered. Now some may think why make such a deal out of only $5. Its not the amount, it is the principle. My receipt was forged (I took a photo of the receipt before the owner took it back). I was doubly insulted when the owner Nile had such a dismissive attitude towards the entire thing. It wasn't until I told him I would have to contact my bank and file a report that he very hastily stated "fine,I'll just give you your 5 bucks back!"
All I could say was wow! Not only did he dismiss this behavior as a "mistake" but never once apologized for this behavior. I am disappointed that a business that myself, friends and coworkers have spent many lunches and dinners together has lost my business. There are way too many small businesses run into the ground because shady employees run amuck. Shame on Nile for being so rude, as if this was my fault. They should have offered to reimburse the entire charge or even offer a small meal on the house. That would have been a class act and I would've left feeling like my business was appreciated. Instead I was obnoxiously dismissed and ridiculed for making a big deal over only $5.00. I am sorry to say I will not visit again.
