I contracted with Sabri Laroussi for the construction of a gate made of steel and wood. Sabri agreed that the price included cementing all posts into the ground. Sabri and his worker arrived late in the afternoon to erect the gate and didn't finish until the evening. He expected to be paid even though I couldn't adequately inspect his work in the dark.
Less than a month later, the gate was no longer latching. It shifted with the first winds and would bang around all night. I had to secure it with a big rock in front. Sabri agreed to fix the gate and arrived several weeks later, but he worked for under an hour and provided only a temporary fix. Within a week or two, with the next winds, the gate once again would not latch closed.
Sabri refused to come and fix the gate again and do what he agreed he would: cement the posts in the ground so there would be no movement. The gate is loosely bolted to the house and he didn't bother to affix the single spacer he added or fill in the holes he created with caulk/stucco.
Professional gate repairmen have since quoted the repair costs at close to what I paid Sabri for the gate. They were surprised by the inferior quality of his work and pointed out that the gate -- less than 3 months old -- is already rusting at the hinges. The materials Sabri used were poor quality, just like his work.
