I called Roland J Down because my condenser wouldn't come on. When the technician arrived, he spent 40 minutes shuffling from the condenser to my fuse box and said that I had a short. He then pronounced it "unfixable" and said that he had set up an appointment with sales for me later that day. When the sales rep arrived, she tried to get me to sign up for $ 212/mo. for TEN YEARS for a Lenox condenser with heat pump unit in their "Advantage" program. I refused to sign that day. A day later, J&J Comfort came and said that all that was wrong with my condenser was "CROSSED WIRES"! I am a single white female over 65. How many people has Roland J Down taken advantage of because they didn't get a second opinion? This company is scary!
Our hot water heater failed the other day. We called Rowland J Downs who we have used for other services. I was informed that a service call would cost a minimum of $99.00 No problem. The Service Tech arrived, looked at our water heater, went outside to put together an estimate and came in a few minutes later. Their estimate was $1518.92. For a standard natural gas , standard vent, 40 gallon. We declined after the shock wore off. We were then informed by the Service Tech that his company has a standard quote of that price and then proceeded to charge us the $99.00 to come over to our house and attempt to gouge us on the price. When I called for service they had all this information. If it was totally un-necessary for the tech to come over for a $99.00 charge just to tell me what the person who took my call could have told me. My issues with this transaction were the standard estimate made it completely un-necessary for the $99.00 charge to deliver the predetermined cost in person. Two, the charge in my opinion is an attempt at price gouging due to our need to have hot water in our house. Rowland J Downs knows exactly what it is doing. The tech maybe makes $20.00 to $30.00 an hour. He spends 15 to 20 minutes personally delivering a predeterminded estimate and chrging $99.00 per stop. If they sell NO water heaters they still make a nice profit at the end of the day. And if they do happen to take advantage of someones situation who desperatly needs hot water they install a $400.00 water tank and charge $1,100 labor for two hours worth of work. I hope to see everyone get refunded this $99.00 and the State Attorney General launch an investigation into their business practices.
