RM Home Repair Reviews

Our family home had a leak in our roof that was causing moisture to leak into the structural components of our home. After receiving three estimates from three people, we decided to go with Ronald "Ronnie” McDaniel because he was the cheapest and promised us he was saving us money, and we didn’t need to do what all the other contractors were telling us. In the end, he ended up charging us $1525 for one hour of work, and instead of fixing the problem, he put a band-aid on it. He was the cheapest quoted estimate, but ended up being the most expensive.

He charged us $1500+ to put caulk on the chimney and a couple other places on our roof. The other two contractors who submitted an estimate were only charging between $1300-1700 more, and they would have removed the rotten wood from the leak, replaced the insulation, membrane, and roofing, redone the chimney properly, and would have properly fixed the structural damage done to our house, which would have been a 2-day job. Ronald came over for one hour, and instead of removing the structural damage, he put some putty over the leaky areas. Now we have to spend more money to remove his work, and hire someone to do the job properly.

He came off as a nice guy when we met him for the estimates, told us how his family has been doing roofing for three generations and how all he’s trying to do is "save us money” and how all the other contractors who told us we need to do this and that are trying to take advantage of us. In the end, it’s him who took advantage of us. After he put caulk on the chimney (which we is something we could have done ourselves), we asked him about fixing the interior damage. Instead of removing the decaying wood, he suggested plastering over it and "sistering” it with another piece of wood, and quoted us $2300+ more than the other contractors originally quoted. Something about this didn’t sit right. I asked another contractor about this and he confirmed that he wasn’t fixing the problem, but bandaiding it.

So we had a couple other roofers come by and take a look at his work, and one told us that we shouldn’t have been charged more than $150-200 for the work he did, and another one told us that the work he did is a temporary solution that might last a year of we’re lucky. Ronald had promised us that it was a 10 year fix. After confronting him about this and his overcharging, he said the other roofers didn’t know what they were talking about and he had receipts proving that his materials cost at least $400 and that he would send receipts later. Instead of sending us receipts, he sent us screenshots for the highest prices he could find online for materials he supposedly used, which did not add up to $400. Even if we gave him the benefit of the doubt and believed his materials cost $400, that still means he charged us $1125 for an hour of easy labor and band-aid over a problem that we now have to spend more money to fix. We feel completely conned by this man and are writing this review to warn others.
