A negligent personal trainer pushed me into running when I was clearly out of shape and told them so, aggravating a bone spur and tearing a meniscus. In March, the gym closed because of COVID, but the pain continued. After 26 sessions of physical therapy, X-Rays and two MRIs, the osteopathic surgeon says I likely have permanent knee damage. I never had a single knee problem before walking into Retro. My fault for not leaving sooner - agreed, but I'm not the professional here.
Then, in September 2020, they started billing me again even though I was my account was on medical hold. No phone call, no e-mail, no text - just a resumption of billing. Why are gyms so sleazy?
This post is not an outlet for anger or frustration - my letters to Retro Corporate, BBB and the Dept. of Consumer Affairs will be *that* outlet. I am sending out a warning: caveat emptor. When you join one of these gyms, be very careful because it seems like their mode of operations is to screw you.
If there was a -5, would be the best suitable review. Absolutely horrible experience and I wouldn't recommend this gym to anyone. The only real convenience is the free parking, which is a big deal in Queens area.
First of all, I have been with this gym for over a decade, when it used to be Synergy and it was so much better. I have been to Retro in Long for years and in Queens but this Forest Hills VIP branch is really going down hill.
They charged me $83.00 for cancelling due to moving which is not mentioned on the contract nor was ever mentioned verbally. This is totally illegal and unprofessional. The staff (Jadi or JS or something like that) couldn't be more rude, non empathetic and unprofessional. I never paid in my life for having to move in another area and giving all the proving paperwork. They also charged my husband $80.00-$100.00 for personal training that was supposed to be 40' that ended up being 30' with the trainer taking my husband to the machines because as per the excuse there is not enough space. The gym is tiny, half the machines not working, and water is dripping from the celling.
On top of all this scum and ridiculous fees the staff attitude is unprofessional, not explanatory and they try to make money with a sneaky way and make up fees the last minute. They try aggressively to make money and they don't fully explain their questionable contracts. When we were signing up we had some questions with my husband, we had a bad feeling and the explanations we were getting were very vague. Instead of explaining things to us, the kids who work there made fun of us and laughed as a response to our questions.
I was transferred from another gym and was told from Lisa that my transfer was going to take 10 days...it took 3 months!! I was going every day trying to get a resolution, called more than 10 times and they still were not doing anything. They found about the mistake 3 months later and in the meantime they were giving me hard time every time I would go because they couldn't see me in the system. They never apologized, or even said sorry out of courtesy, instead they charged me another 3 MONTHS! because of their late transfer. Cold, not understanding and not caring at all they demanded me to pay for it. Stay away from this gym and don't spend your hard working money, it is not worth a penny.
I WANT BACK MY $83.00. There is no such term in my contract neither was ever mentioned.
I worked out there for 2 years and all was fine. About 2 years ago I moved and canceled my membership. For some reason the gyms billing company continued to charge my card each month for roughly 7 months. When I called to ask for a refund Amanda the manager said how sorry she was and that the gym changed billing companies and they would correct the mistake. It's been another 15 months that has pass and all I get is the run around from them about my refund. I call twice a month and each time I call Amanda her sister Christina are available. The staff tells me to leave a message and they will call back but never do. I final got the owner and their father mike on the phone and he blows me off telling me that his daughter will call me by 5pm and fix the mistake. It's now 3 days later and nothing. I'm filing a small claims complaint as well as better business. Now it will cost them more then the 240 they owe me.
I bought a gym membership for my autistic son and paid on auto-pay for over a year, and we were no longer under contract, just month to month. We moved from New Jersey to Florida and called Retro Fitness in September 2015 to let them know we needed to cancel my son's membership. I spoke to multiple people at this location and they said the only way we could close the membership was in person. I told each person it would not be possible to drive 19 hours just to close this account, and they still refused to close the account.
When my credit card bill arrived and they were still charging us monthly (even though we were not under any contract and were paid in fulll when I told them to cancel because we moved), I disputed it with DiscoverCard and they removed the charge and blocked Retro Fitness from any further charging to my account. The following month it was billed again, so I called DiscoverCard and they said the the people at Retro Fitness tried to outsmart the blocked account by changing one letter in their name and rebilling it.
So this time they reversed the charge again and changed my account number so they couldn't charge it again.
Now Retro Fitness has a collection agency calling my autistic son on his cell phone every day harassing him. My son is struggling on 2 different medications and in weekly therapy and has to deal with this harassment on a daily basis. I just called Retro Fitness again and spoke to "Abe Lazizi" and explained this again, and he still refuses to resolve the problem. I want to speak to a lawyer if any lawyer in interested in helping.
