Retail Merchandiser Reviews
Our company was contacted by retail merchandiser claiming they were interested in doing a feature story on our company centered around our ceo. I engaged in a pre-interview on a separate day so the researcher could see if the "story was a fit" for the writers and editors.
I was called back and was told, with much enthusiasm. That rm was interested in moving forward with the story and was given the issue in which we would be featured. But i was also told that when they do a feature story, they give the vendors with which we do business an opportunity to purchase advertising Either in a congratulatory tone or otherwise) that would be placed around/on the pages where our article would be.
With great hesitation, we rounded up a short list of vendors for rm to contact. When we only supplied six, the researcher expressed great concern that the number was far too low. When i let her know that we were not interested in nor comfortable with them approaching any more vendors than that, the tone of our interactions changed. After coming to this sight, i found another person who complained and the stories sounded familiar.
I reached out to the researcher and wrote this:
"i am a bit troubled by your message. My director was not entirely comfortable with us approaching vendors at all, so the fact that we sent along any vendors is sort of an accomplishment. And, as i said, i am hopeful to send one more. You are correct in your assumption ..., which reduces the number of vendor partnerships we have. But what troubles me is the offhanded remark that 'companies our size usually send in at least 20.' if our short list is problematic for retail merchandiser, then perhaps it may be best to not pursue this article any further. The escalating rush to “meet deadline” is becoming suspect and this entire vendor list process is leaving me feeling uncomfortable.
If pursuing a 'feature article' with us was merely an end run to locate a company that retail merchandiser believed would present a significant pool of potential advertisers, well, that would be disappointing.
Has an editor/writer been assigned to this article? I am providing a link that you may find interesting. If we find out from our vendors that anything remotely close to “this is important to [our ceo]” is being said to them, this conversation will take an entirely different turn."
The researcher was quick to call me and attempt to assure me that this was not a scam and that it didn't matter if our vendors purchased advertising space. Almost four months to the day after this email was sent, i was called and told that because our vendors had not purchased advertising, it was their policy that they would not move forward with the article.
Do not waste your time with this worthless scam. It is embarrassing that they contacted any of our vendors.
