Reno Auto Sound Reviews

  • Mar 8, 2017

I took my 2017 Toyota Tacoma to Reno Auto Sound to get a Remote Start installed on Feb 20, 2017. The guy that was working the front desk said that could do the install, but their might be "issues" with my Tacoma, because of the push button ignition, and that it might add an extra $50 labor cost, which immediately alerted me that these guys are nickel and dimers, but I said ok, as long as I could get it done right.

I brought my truck in that Saturday at 9:00am in the morning, and they said they would call me when they finished. 5:30pm comes around so I decide to call them and see what's going on, and the same guy James answers the phone and tells me that they're almost done, come pick it up in 45 minutes. I show up to the shop and he says they are still working on it, so I leave for another 35 minutes, and then they call and say its ready.

I show back up to the shop and James immediately tells me that their were some "issues".

He said that they got everything installed, BUT the remote start isn't communicating with my truck, so it isn't working. I start asking them what they are going to do to get it working, and they say I need to go to the dealership and have them hook it up to the diagnostic machine and turn on a switch that tells the truck that their is a remote start installed.

He said it was no big deal and it'll take like 10 minutes and everything will work, and then he asks me how much I want to pay at the moment. I tell him, Im not paying anything until the Remote Start works, and he tells me that they have already done the labor and that I could pay half now, half later. I'm under the impression that this is something that Toyota can handle fairly easy, so I reluctantly agree to pay half right then.

I make an appointment at Toyota the following Monday morning and explain what I needed done, and the service guy said it wasn't too big of an issue and I should be out of their quickly. Two hours pass and the foreman for the service department comes up to me and tells me that 2017 Toyota Tacomas don't have any Remote Start "buttons to switch" that can magically turn on the remote start that Reno Auto Sound installed. He said they have 27 layers of security for the truck to start the engine, and the hardware they installed(Clifford 590x) is not programmed to bypass that security. He said toyota doesn't even make a remote start for the 2017 yet, and that I should wait until they do and have Toyota install it. He said to go back and get my money back.

I call Reno Auto Sound and tell them what was going on and that I wanted a refund, and they said at this point they only will give me store credit, and that the foreman didn't know how to work the diagnostic machine to be able to turn on the Remote Start. He says that he's going to call his tech friend and figure out what we have to do to get it to start. I say great, make me an appointment to get this Remote Start taken out, give me a full refund, and if you figure out a solution before that, than let's get it to start. They said they would have to ask the boss about the refund and they would call me back and let me know.

About 3 days later I hadn't heard a response, so I called them and asked for an update. They basically just said their was nothing they could do, and to bring my truck down and that they hadn't talked to "Bossman" yet about the refund.

I take my truck down and they say there's 3 other installations in front of me, and that they would call me when it was ready. 4 hours later I get a call that they had successfully uninstalled the hardware, but that the total labor they were charging me was $300, and that they would give me $100 back.

So at this point they have wasted about 15 hours of my time, installed and uninstalled a Remote Start that has never ever worked, and now they are charging me $300 for the labor? I raised hell with the guy and told him they were scumbags and that was just bulls*. I grabbed my $100 and left.
