Minutes after this delivery was made; as soon as the delivery men had left, as I was keeping a distance due to the pandemic. Is when I got up close to the piece and was able to see the damage. I immediately contacted Coleman Furniture to report the damages to the item that was just delivered. They referred me to their company called Renegade and in turn asked me to send photos, of which I had sent several, showing chips and marks on several areas of the chest.
Especially, a chip out of one of the drawers in the unit. They then asked me to send additional photos from a distance of 6 feet. The damages were not noticeable from 6 feet away, as the photos clearly showed. One of the delivery men was standing in front of the unit showing that each drawer opened and closed; but I had no view of the actual drawer, with both a chip on the top corner as well as scratches on the front. And several other areas on the side, which was where the other delivery man was standing next to.
This back and forth with their company renegade, went on for months. After seeing the photos they were going to send me $100.00 to have the repairs done; however, the top drawer was chipped, so in lieu of them sending me money for damages I asked if they would simply provide a single drawer.
At first, this was an acceptable solution and then later they decided they could not send me one drawer. They recognized the damage, and they knew I let them know immediately I assumed they would most likely replace the entire piece but realized that was not going to happen.
In order to collect the $100.00, it would mean having yet another person inside my home to do repairs and if it cost more than $100.00, I would be responsible to pay the difference. Something, due to my lung disease was extremely concerning. I even offered them my medical records so they could understand that during the delivery I could barely be in the room while they were installing it, as wearing a mask creates additional breathing problems for me. I, also, had not expected that I would end up with a refurbished chest if I had to have it repaired.
They have a policy that was in effect prior to COVID which says if you sign for your delivery you are signing away any rights for issues with your purchase. Something not clearly stated nor something that should be acceptable during a pandemic. Although, they clearly knew mine had just arrived and I wasn't able to get up close to inspect it during the delivery. Ironically, even those that did NOT sign due to damage (prior to COVID) where given the same run around as myself. Expecting them to have repairs made on their own and being compensated up to $100.00 once the repairs are done and a receipt is sent.
Again, I was NOT having anyone in my home doing repairs; nor would I expect to purchase a new item and have to have it repaired. So, I did not find their offer acceptable, as they gave me both a limited time to get the work done and would not compensate me for whatever the costs would be over the $100.00.
I have done business with many other online furniture sellers and not one of them expected me to have damages repaired, they simply replaced the item. Even after signing for delivery. They charged me way beyond the actual cost of the item almost 300.00 more if I had purchased directly from the manufacturer, just for their white glove delivery. This piece did not need any assembly other than putting drawers inside it, so I basically paid to have it taken to a second floor.
They are unscrupulous in how they handle their customers, after they have your money. Those that try to cancel an order are penalized as well; even when their items were never shipped, they are charged a restocking fee.
