AC Repair Ripoff?... Intentional Scam?... Thick Headed CEO?... Stupid Homeowner?... What?? (Pick One) My AC unit has been taken care of by "REM Air Conditioning Of Tampa" since I purchased a new complete AC system from them for my home in 2007 for roughly $6000.00, a company consisting of people I was proud to call friends... until now The Blower Motor on the outside unit seized up on 05/24/2018, Thursday... just two days before Memorial Day weekend. REM's technician (Leo) arrived at 4:05 PM that same day, installed a new blower motor, Model K55HXLRH-0824 1/5 HP and a 10 UF Capacitor, and left at 5:30 PM... a total time period of 1 hour, 35 minutes. My billing invoice simply states the description or the motor as a "825 Rheem Motor", however upon inspecting the installed motor, it is a 824 motor manufactured by "Nidec", the 824 pertains to rpm. The capacitor is simply listed as a 10 uf Cap.
I had no problem looking up list prices via various manufacturers of the motor and capacitor in this day and age. The installed motor, model K55HXLRH0824 1/5 HP varies in it's list price anywhere from $136.98 to 169.99. The 10 UF Capacitor roughly from $5.00 to about $15.00, really a non expensive component. My billing invoice Does Not itemize the components list price!... Motor charge??... Capacitor charge??... Labor charge?? However, in the "Total Amount Due" column, they didn't neglect to make an entry. It states $693.00 . With hot days and encountering Memorial Day weekend, I had no choice but to pay the bill as it stood... BUT... I told "Leo" that I would take this error up with the owners of REM and have it straightened out.
Two polite emails and two polite regular mails later, I find myself up against a brick wall so to speak. The owners won't budge, have refused to itemize the billing, and generally are experts in insulting ones intelligence. A third letter via regular mail, not polite, followed which absolutely has my relationship with REM severed forever. To ask them to itemize their billing invoice properly or even mention their hourly labor rate... I get the same response from talking to my cat! So, Rem's invoice to me..... Motor $??, Capacitor $??, plus 1-1/2 hours labor $?? = $693.00 ??... A rude awakening... I should know better! And today, 06/11/2018, I receive the following email from Joseph Mincher (Jr-Sr??), and myself having been in the marine line of business for over 30 years (boats/Engines), I'm well aware of what a unscrupulous person can do with inflating the total billing, however I always listed the part numbers and the individual prices of all components with the parts price book handy for the customer if they wished to check. Mr Minchers admitted procedure below, in my opinion, leaves something to be desired. ***** -----Original Message----- From: REM Air Conditioning of Tampa Inc To: reevesj32 Sent: Mon, Jun 11, 2018 3:10 pm Subject: Re: Website Contact - Non Itemized Invoice Mr Reeves We use a flat rate pricing book that all our technicians have on their truck . We have been using this for over 10 years . We do not break out any pricing , if we did we would get fined by the state of Florida . With flat rate pricing we do not have to add the tax . With respect to the motor replacement . You are expecting to pay $ 80 for call and $ 168 for motor . We were there for an hour and a half , we also replaced capacitor for motor , and also performed maintenance . We have already refunded you $80 as a good gesture . We feel as a company we have been fair in our pricing . Thanks Joe Mincher
