Race Ready Truck Service Reviews

  • Feb 26, 2018

I Took my 1992 freightliner FLD truck for repairs. The issue the truck had was fuel getting into the coolant, This is an Issue i had repair on this truck 3 years prior. the solution was to replace the o rings on the fuel injectors. I drove the truck to RACE READY TRUCK SERVICE in Cuero TX, the truck drove fine with no missing on the engine or smoke coming from the exhaust. I spoke to Wesley Schmidt, owner of the shop. I told him what the problem was and the solution (since I had the truck repaired due to the same problem before), I specifically requested to have the injector o rings replaced.

I asked him for an estimate and Wesley told me that he will check the truck and let me know. I had another truck being repaired at the same time at the same shop, i stopped by a couple of days later to pick up the other truck and asked for the estimate. I specifically told Wesley to only replace the o-rings on the injectors.

He seemed surprised about me being so specific about the repairs I Wanted and proceed to tell me that usually , the injector cups go bad on this heads and that the head will need to come off.

I told him to not to remove the cylinder head if the o-rings did not fix the truck to let me know. I left and checked back with him a couple of days later. He told me that the injector cups were leaking after a pressure test and that they needed to be replaced. I asked again for an estimate... he told me that he will get back with me later. I checked with him again after several days of not hearing from him. He told me about a new "TOOL" that will allow him to remove and install new injector cups without the need of removing the cylinder head. I asked for an estimate again.. he told me that the injector cups were not to expensive and that the labor was going to be not that much since the head didn't have to come off.

After several more calls, he mention that he ordered the new tool to remove and install the injector cups, and that he was waiting on it to arrive. After more days went by, I asked him how the truck was doing.. he told me that the tool arrived, that he had removed the injector cups and that he realized that the tool was not good to reinstall the injector cups without removing the cylinder head. (which was the whole purpose of getting that tool, any experience mechanic will know how to use the tool and realize if the tool will do the job without removing the head) At this point, with the injector cups removed... and no way to reinstall the new ones without removing the head... he proceeded to remove the head, which was the number one thing i told him at the beginning not to do.

He assured me that the truck will be ready soon. I asked him for an estimate one more time.. he told me he would get back to me later. At this point I really started to worry about having the truck half disassembled with no estimate from the shop. He never showed me the injector cups leaking and once he removed the head he told me that the valve on cylinder one was bad and that it needed a new/refurbish cylinder head. I asked again for and estimate and he texted me and amount of 4725.00. I was thinking how did I get to this point... when my truck was driven to the shop just needing o-rings. I saw a pattern on the way he does business. he keeps finding stuff.. making stuff up like the "new tool" to install injector cups and the supposed bad valve on the cylinder head.

He never showed me the bad valve on the head or the leaking injector cup. after another week.. i keep asking for the truck, he told me that 2 injectors were bad, the way he tested them was by running the truck and checking the temperature on the exhaust manifold . he even told me that he did not have the connector to be able to connect the diagnose computer to my truck so he can see the performance on the injectors. more days went by...i finally asked him what was the hold on my truck, he told me he was waiting on more parts. .. a asked him, What other parts? he said now that all the injectors were bad.

At this point I realized he has done all this without giving me a proper diagnosis, adding more and more to the repairs and without providing a written estimate and securing a repair authorization signed by me. I told him that my truck got to his shop running fine, that it was odd that all of the sudden all the injectors were bad. I sensed he was getting upset when I told him that he needed to put my truck back together with my original injectors. He told me that he had replaced 2 injectors already and that he could not returned them. I asked again for the estimate and the total of the repairs. his Wife Teresa Schmidt emailed me an invoice for 7028.52. of which 36 hours of labor at 85.00 hr came to 3060.

I asked for an Itemization of the labor hours at what she responded that she asked Wesley Schmidt about it and he said that he couldn't Itemize the labor. I also asked for copies of the Parts invoices and said the invoices were confidential and will not be disclosed to me. At this point I was really afraid that he will do something to my truck and said that that was the way it was and literally make it not driveable. I Make my living driving this truck and could not afford to loose it. It was 3.5 weeks of stress, frustration and disappointment having to deal with Wesley Schmidt and RACE READY TRUCK SERVICE.

I would caution anybody that thinks doing business with him. But if you have to, do not leave the vehicle without a written estimate. this guy talks smooth and pretends to be friendly, but will try to take you for as much money as he can. at the End I paid the bill because I can not afford to enter into a legal battle while my truck is at his shop not working. I was really worried about something else going wrong with my truck while he had it on his shop. I picked up the truck, The truck was not running right. it was smoking like crazy, i had to take it like that. as soon as I drove it from his shop the truck died on the middle of the road. I was able to get it going again and took it to another mechanic to get it fix right this time. Be care full dealing with Race Ready Truck Service and Wesley Schmidt.
