I am an elderly person with a lot of medical issues. I had a prosthetic mitral valve placed in 2005. I have to take Warfarin to thin my blood. On July 23, 2020, I had a hemorrhage stroke and had to be hospitalized at Einstein Medical Center until August 3, 2020, due to high INR (4.5). A cardiologist at Eisntein ordered that my blood be drawn every week in order to adjust the level of Warfarin in my blood and the INR between 2.5 and 3.0, because if the INR is too low, the valve may get stuck, and if the INR is too high, I may have another hemorrhage stroke. The contract went to Professional Technicians, Inc. (PTI).
Many times, the company’s phlebotomist did not show up (Jan. 25, 2021; Feb. 1, 2021; Mar. 15, 2021; Mar. 29, 2021; Apr. 12, 2021; and May 3, 2021). The company has no courtesy to call and let me know that the phlebotomist would not come and re-schedule me for the following day. I had to wait for the phlebotomist for the whole day without knowing that he or she would not come.
Not only the company causes inconvenience for the patients but also creates dangerous conditions for the patients from not knowing how to adjust their medications in a timely manner.
On 3/22/2021 my INR was at 3.0. On 3/29/2021 the phlebotomist did not show up. On 4/5/2021 my INR went down to 1.5.
On 4/5/2021 my INR was at 1.5. On 4/12/2021 the phlebotomist did not show up. On 4/19/2021 my INR went up to 3.7.
On 4/26/2021 my INR was 2.6. On 5/3/2021 the phlebotomist did not show up. On 5/10/2021 my INR went down to 2.1.
The company also has a policy that if I am not available when the phlebotomist shows up, I will be charged a $30.00 missed appointment fee. On 3/15/2021 and 5/3/2021 I waited for the phlebotomist to come, but no one showed up. The company did not have the courtesy to call and let me know that the phlebotomist would not show up or to re-schedule the appointment. Now the company sent me two bills for $60.00 for the missed appointment fees on 3/15/2021 and 5/3/2021.
It is fair that if I missed the appointment, I would have to pay $30.00, so when the phlebotomist missed an appointment, the company should compensate me similarly for wasting my time and for endangering my health and welfare.
I wrote the company several letters concerning these issues, but the company keeps ignoring my requests.
