I was contacted by phone by Powers Miller (aka Brettan Powers Miller) many times over the years with "opportunities" to purchase turn key properties, I passed on all of them. This partcular day he offered a lending opporunity offering a high interest rate for a very "short term" loan of 20k secured by closing proceeds on the sale of a home in Spring TX. It was one of those rush type deals, the first warning sign I missed. The second missed sign was the higher than typical interest rate offered of 25%. He very elequently explained that away with one of Powers made to order lies. It happened to be a few days before hurricane Harvey hit Texas and the property I supposedly lent on was in Spring TX and was unaffected by the hurricane. This was the beginning of many lies Powers began telling me, using the hurricane as his very first excuse, to be followed by many more over the next several months.
That was the beginning of a long string of lies and unkept promises to pay that went on for months. He never made a single attempt to make any payments, just kept making promises which he never followed through on.
Finally I obtained a lawyer who uncovered that the document that I signed was fraudulent and sent Powers a demand letter to pay sighting he was in breach of the contract and would be sued for fraud.
I began doing research on my own that turned up mug shots and other people on rip off report. I made several calls to other people who had similar stories of being cheated by Powers, some for much more money than I lost. Somehow I was the lucky one only losing 19k, I felt such compassion for how he negatively affected others. His scams seemed to all be related real estate somehow, some were rental property scams, some lending scams, some even involving people from out of the country.
His response to me now is to turn me, the victim, into just a person who made a bad investment that went wrong. He takes no responsibility for all the lies and the scam document he presented to me. He has a way of justifying his behavior and blaming the victim. He is a professional liar. He presented me with telephone numbers that don't work and addresses that are undeliverable. I'm not even sure that Market Makers is/was a valid company, it certainly isn't ran as a legitimate company.
All I can say is I would not deal with Powers unless you like losing money. See an attorney before signing anything, the little you pay to the attorney will save you a lot of lost money and months, maybe years of grief. I wish I had, I wouldn't be writing this report today. It's very sad to see how many people Powers has negatively impacted. Many people who worked so hard to make money and try to invest it wisely, then along comes Powers to scam you our of your hard earned money.
I wish I had researched him better and not fallen for the bums rush sweatheart deal he offered me. I should have done more due diligence, seen an attorney, hung up the phone, anything but continued a conversation with Powers. What a mistake I made picking up the phone that Friday afternoon and for some reason saying yes to something I would ordinarily have know better and passed on. Why that day did I make the decision to trust him? Sometimes we just make the wrong decision, this was one of those times.
