My 78 year old mother has terminal colon cancer and recently came to my home for hospice. In finding her mail she has sent $1000's to Peter Popoff who says he will pray for her Heath and for her to obtain money he just needs her bank account information. Most recently he sent her a penny and green sand telling her to wrap the penny up and sprinkle the sand and she will be cured and get money but he needs her bank account/ credit card info for this to work.

Like many others I was led to believe that your letters were genuine and even assumed that you were speaking directly to what I was going through (i.e. spiritually, emotionally, mentally, physically), however I kept wondering how you felt comfortable prophesizing to someone that you never met and after asking many questions of me to ‘get to know me better’, I intuitively knew something was not right. However, I did not want to believe that anyone would deceive people or use God’s name in vain to collect money from people who are in desperate circumstances.

In the beginning when I received your letters, my husband stated that he did not want me to send money to your ministry and attempted to prove that your ministry was a ‘fraud’. I refused to listen to him because I just couldn’t comprehend that someone or a group of people stating that they are followers of Christ would manipulate individuals, many facing challenging circumstances by asking for money and appearing to perform ‘miraculous healings’.

At the end of each letter, you request money and this appears to be the theme of each letter, as if to say that to be blessed, one must ONLY sow financial seeds. My belief in and communication with God is instantaneous, so to say that one MUST have an intercessor or a prophet to hear from God is simply not true. Additionally, the items that were sent to me to ‘perform’ specific acts did not produce any results and I began to think that I was treating God as a magician. I understand that life does not work as a ‘magic trick’.

I cannot simply perform acts and God will give me a million dollars or a brand new house, but I understand that faith, trust and a genuine belief in God’s power will sustain me and direct me into leading the life that God has for me. Belief in God is not only about material possessions or wealth, it is about overall well-being and knowing that there is a supernatural being outside of us who is in control and because of that belief, I understand that I can be content and live a joyful life no matters what happens.

I was led (since God gives us intuition if we heed it) to research Reverend Peter Popoff’s ministries and I located several websites that spoke negatively and even one website where an investigation was conducted and proved that your ministry was deceptive. I was saddened and ‘sickened’ to my stomach to realize that Reverend Popoff, his wife and close confidants were putting on a ‘theatrical show’ at different services across the country while appearing to prophesy over individuals.

However, it turned out to be a hoax and Reverend Popoff was exposed. I have attached the research I conducted and I would like to ask for the money that I sent to your ministry to be returned to my attention immediately. I am prepared to take legal action since this is a serious matter and the money I sent in was to be used to ‘sow’ into a ministry that was to build God’s kingdom, help others and myself.

I sent in $20.00 cash, $3.00 cash and two checks in the amounts of $27.00 and $28.11; please refund the total amount of $78.11 to my attention. I am passionate about justice and fairness and I do not condone these types of acts, therefore I am willing to submit my letter to news stations here in the Baltimore/Washington, DC area(s) and on public radio stations because your organization’s actions are despicable.

Finally, I will leave your ministry with these powerful scriptures and pray that your organization will realize that deceiving individuals who are seeking Christ is not ‘Christ like at all’. They are very applicable to this situation and I am pretty sure Reverend Peter Popoff is familiar with them since he is a man who claims to serve Christ and appears to know the bible.

Deuteronomy 18:20 - But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.

1 John 4:1-6 - Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them.
