Peaceable Kingdom Shelter and Clinic Reviews

  • Nov 21, 2016

My dog passed away and while I tried very hard to find the same breed to adopt there weren't many places who would let a family with a child under 10 adopt. I saw an available dog within a 3 hour drive at Peaceable Kingdom. I called, the woman in charge of dogs but she does not return phone calls. I emailed and got a snotty/belittling response about what time we could meet the dog because THEY are all volunteers. We had to leave early in the afternoon to miss rush hour and several highways so that we could be there at 7 pm. A rude ypung girl brought the dog to meet us. She said, "He has not been exposed to cats let me do a cat test with him" The dog was sent into a room reaking of ammonia with no windows. Since he had no reaction he appeared to her to be good with cats. He now bullies my cats 24/7. The fun truly started! They checked with my vet and since my cats do not get rabies vaccines I would be eliminated. My cats do not go outside! They cannot get over a 10 foot fence! I had to next prove that all animals are spayed/neutered. I had to have a phone interview. A reference had to be called. Finally we were apprpved for the dog!

Oh, she has benign tumors which must be removed! I bring a baby, and a 12 year old dog on a Saturday. I was very clear with the volunteer who did the phone interview what time I would arrive. We arrived early! The volunteer spoke to me for 2 minutes while she went to flirt with another female volunteer. We waited 3 hours to bring the dog home. We had to sign a waiver that the dog would come back to have tumors removed next Saturday. I went back the next Saturday and spent 8 hours waiting to pick the dog up. While waiting I asked if possible if could have a donated collar and leash. I was told, "Sure, we have plenty!"There was a basket stating that all volunteers could take these. There are thousands of donated items. During the 3 visits we made there each time people drop off many items. As I am returning to my car with a baby to get it open for the dog a nasty volunteer comes running out and corners me saying, "The free items are for homeless familes! If you cannot afford a leash for your dogs then think about surrendering all of your animals!" She was the volunteer who met with us the very first visit. I kept my mouth shut because I didn't want to argue with her . I thought, "Fianally, I am done!"

Phone call after phone call came in from another volunteer, 2 days after the dog came home. I told her, "The dog growls at my child, he barks non stop, and is almost impossible to control." She had an answer for everything I said. The next time she phoned she left me threatening messages. She didn't know my father was in intensive care and passed away. She still kept phoning me. To put the icing on the cake I made a phone call to the Attorney General's office of Pennsylvania. A very nice man told me that this place has PLENTY of people who receive a salary but they make volunteers do all of the work He stated that from what he had been told was that this group was hoping to take over the SPCA in Lehigh County . The woman in charge of dogs who never answers her phone makes $12k a year doing nothing.

Several other people were complaning about this. It becomes a problem because a lot of elderly men and women do not use smart phones or the internet. They use a landline and want to speak with a human being. Some people there were very kind, a total of 2. I had volunteers hugging dogs throw me dirty looks when I recommended to a Vietnam Veteran that he adopt a dog from a shelter in Easton because they give service men and women free pets and he would be treated much better. The next time I was looking to adopt a dog I went to Animal Care and Control in Brooklyn. I received a free dog for vets. They were very kind to us and the volunteer checking up said, "You have wonderful reviews so if you ever want to adopt again please do." This review is a warning to potential adopters. If you want a dog or cat please get one from a high kill shelter! They are often only $15. Save yourself the grief and the money! Public pounds ask very few questions and they do not belittle you. I would also be leery of donating money to Peaceable Kingdom. I was told in an email, "We are all volunteers!" The sad thing is that there is a room full of 70 cats that never get adopted because of the stipulations and high prices. Dogs sit for a long time in cages. There is no yard for these dogs to run. They pee all over the floor and wait anxiously to go out. It reeks of urine im this place. Can we not do better than this? I did keep the dog only because I was afraid he would never find another home due to his growling issue. In closing, this place has nothing to do with peace!
