This past spring, my husband and I were referred to The Oxford Bulldog Club by a coworker of my husband. We had been researching bulldogs and wanted to add to our family. The breeders Larry Coker and Jenifer Coker seemed to be a great choice. We spoke with Larry and Jennifer in depth about their dogs and breeding history. We were told that we would be involved in the process every step of the way, including being able to attend the birth of our puppy to be. We thought this would be a great experience for the entire family and we were sold. Prior to putting our deposit in that day April 17th, we were told that Una would be the mother and we would have second choice in selecting our puppy when the time came, as there was another deposit already presented. We signed the contract and left a deposit of $500.
We spent months being excited. During this time, our daughter underwent an extensive surgery and was wheel chair bound. The entire time we focused on the upcoming new addition to keep her spirits up. During the summer months, we had not heard anything about the puppies. My husband texted Jennifer to inquire about the status of the mother dog, as it was taking longer than anticipated for her to go into heat. We were not kept up-to-date unless we inquired.
Finally, the day came and we found out that there were two mother dogs in heat and that both were to be impregnated. This was great news and we could not wait until the puppies were born. We were not kept in the loop as promised but that was okay with us, we were just happy that we were to have a new family member coming soon. Then in September, the puppies were born. We were not invited to the birth as promised. Corey texted Larry to inquire about the dogs and see when we could meet and select our new puppy.
Larry called my husband back and claimed that we had second pick on the other dog – not the dog we were promised in April. Since the dog he claimed we had 2nd choice on (not the dog we agreed upon as the mother) had only 1 puppy, we now had last pick of the puppies. Corey had contacted Larry and asked about it. The person who had taken our selection place was in fact invited to the birth and had been kept in the loop. We were a bit confused about what had happened and felt a bit cheated. My husband had explained this to Larry. At that point Larry stated that we did not have a choice and it was his way or we would not get a dog at all. We were also told that he had consulted another breeder from Bruce Township and she suggested offering us our deposit back. At this point Larry’s tone became exceptionally abusive and loud to the point of yelling and belittling my husband over the phone with excessive foul language. Larry stated that the contract was intentionally vague so that “he had my husband by the balls”. He admitted he purposely uses a vague contract in situations as this.
We went back and forth trying to decide what to do and finally my husband and I came to the conclusion that we should just sever ties and accept our deposit. It was heartbreaking to our family but we realized this breeder could not be trusted. We texted him back on a Saturday, he called my husband back yelling and screaming at him once again and this time his wife was screaming and yelling in the background. We explained that we would sever ties and requested the deposit which he was now reluctant to give us. A few days later, Larry called and asked if we would reconsider. At this point, we could not. Larry told us that we could have our deposit back once he had sold the dog. He soon after sold the dog (continuing to have 2 deposits on one dog). The dog went to the new buyer this past week. My husband contacted Larry and was told that we now needed to wait until December to receive our deposit. This communication was all through text. Then he received a text to call. My husband called back and Jennifer answered the phone began screaming at my husband and literally threatened to kill him through strangulation. We have a partial recording of this phone call. We contacted the police. The police told us to stop communication. We did. A few hours later, we received a text from Larry Coker stating that the police did not care and that we are not aware of who he knows. This was another blatant threat. We then received a call that we could not make out but Larry was yelling into the phone
I would like to see to it that this happens to no one else. This experience has been completely horrible. Upon research, I see that claims have been made that they belong to other clubs. These clubs have denied affiliations (ie Detroit Bulldog Club). Do your research, you would be amazed at what you will find out about the financial misdealings with these people. There is an obvious pattern of dishonesty and poor practices. Side Note: Jennifer owns a photography business. I would steer clear of doing any business with the Cokers.
