Outdoors International (OI) is a hunting and fishing consulting company that books clients for outdoor trips. In 2014, I booked with them for a New Mexico trophy mule deer hunt. They set me up with a New Mexico outfitter named Nick Mongragon.
His hunts were highly recommended by OI. They said that some of their owners had hunted with Mr. Mondragon in the recent past and were very pleased. The hunt was set for December of 2014. The initial deposit was $4250.00. I paid the remainder of the cost in September which was $4300.00 for a total of $8550 for the hunt.
In December of 2014, Mr. Mondragon notified me that "the snow had not driven the deer down yet and he had seen no good bucks." He recommended that we postpone the hunt until the next year, December of 2105. I agreed. WHAT WAS REALLY GOING ON WAS THAT HE WAS HEADING FOR PRISON.
As it turns out, Mr. Mondragon had previously been CONVICTED OF MULTIPLE FELONIES, including disposing of stolen property, aggravated assault of a family member, theft of rental property, and theft of government property.
THIS IS WHO OUTDOORS INTERNATIONAL BOOKED ME WITH FOR A RIFLE HUNTING TRIP.
As a convicted felon, Mondragon could not be associated with firearms. On July 17, 2014, he plead guilty to being a felon in possession of ammuntion and was sentenced to a year and a day in prison and is on supervised release for three years after his release.
Needless to say, my hunt did not occur and I was out all of my money. I found out about this on November of 2015, and promptly contacted Outdoors International. The consultant that I was working with was and is a very good person. He had recommended Mondragon based on what this bosses told him. I'm not going to name him, but he did everything he could to help me out.
THE OWNERS OF OUTDOORS INTERNATIONAL, RUSS MEYER, MARC WARNKE, AND CORY GLAUNER, DID NOTHING.
One of them called me and bascially just said that I should have bought trip insurance. Tough luck.
I've been hunting for 50 years and have never had to buy insurance to cover me against a recommended guide who was a multiple felon.
I put my trust in Outdoors International and am very sorry I did so.
