These landlords took advantage of thier tenants whenever possible. In our years living there, they never did any maintainence inside our apartment. Our neighbors also complained about how unpleasant these people were to them.
We should have seen the red flags from the start. We first applied before leaving for a long weekend out of town. They got back to us a couple days later and told us we had to sign the lease immediately or they were going to rent the apartment to someone else. We explained we really wanted the apartment but were on vacation and would be back the following day, but they said that wasn't soon enough - so we ended up driving strait back to sign. When we did the walk-through I asked if the walls would be painted because they were stained in the kitchen and bathroom (mold, grease, no venting or hood over stove) and they told us yes. Then, after signing the lease and moving in, they refused to paint the walls and told us we were asking for "perfection".
Rent was due on the 1st, but ANY delays resulted in a late fee (however, they cashed the checks they recieve dwhenever they pleased). Our payments were automatic and during the holidays one year, the check was delayed in the mail and was not delivered on the 1st (it was the 1st of January and a holiday). They demanded we bring them the check that day in person with an additional late fee even though the check was scheduled to be delivered on the 2nd (which we also had to go cancel).
The only work they did was outdoor lawn work. Once, they intentionally turned the sprinklers on right after our upstairs neighbor was bringing her infant daughter in from a walk and soaked her stroller and belongings because they were mad at her for leaving the stroller on the indoor porch.
When we moved out they charged us hundreds of dollars in absurd repairs, like replacing blinds that had been broken when we moved in and for cleaning a 30-year-old oven that was impossible to ever get truly clean. They also charged us to remove items left in the basement by other tenants that had been there the whole time we lived there even though we informed them that they did not belong to us.
There were many other passive-aggresive things they did along the way to assert thier control over us. I could write a book. It was terrible.
It would be one thing if the apartments were well cared for, but they were really run down. Stains everywhere, holes in the floors, windows so drafty that the curtains blew even when they were closed, super old and inefficient appliances, and the landlords' personal belongings kept in the basement and even in some cupboards in our kitchen. We are so relieved to be out of the place and rid of these people. They are not kind people and we constantly felt threatened by them. Somehow they always managed to take advantage of us as much as possible while always staying within the law (I tried several times to seek legal help from renters rights groups).
