I was sitting quietly at my desk at work when a number I didn't recognize called my personal phone. It was someone claiming to be from the US Dept of investigation and legal affairs. They were claiming there was a warrant out for my arrest for tax evasion from the year 2012, 13, and 14. I spoke with an "officer David" and he was claiming I was going to be arrested and that I had 2 options, I could either hire an attorney and fight it out in court and risk paying even more in legal fees and more if I'm found guilty, or I could get it paid off using a "tax voucher". They were complete foreigners and I assumed it was a scam, but the thought of getting arrested and getting a conviction would mean I'd lose my job and i panicked, but was later convinced they were following me because they knew where I was, and so complied out of straight up fear. For example, I pulled into Walmart, and they said "you're at Walmart now right?" And it scared the crap out of me. So they told me to leave work and not let anyone know where I was going (which was another red flag), so I had to make up some bogus thing like I was going to lunch. I didn't want to drag any coworkers into this, so I complied. They told me to purchase gift cards in place of tax vouchers which I knew was bull crap, but it was almost like having a gun to my head, so I complied. I went to Walmart, where I purchased a large amount of gift cards and was instructed to give them the numbers off the back. After giving the gift card numbers they brought up a mysterious email saying I owe even more in late fees, so they told me to go to a different store and purchase more cards. I went to CVS, and purchased more cards under their direction. Like I had said, I knew the call was bogus, but I was convinced they were following me and was going to get the money one way or another. I complied out of fear. If you get a call from someone claiming to be from any US department, hang up right away. If it's the real dept they will send a letter anyways.
