A month ago my wife fell hurting her arm. Turned out it was broken, but did not need to be set. She went to Oak Hill Hospital. She informed we do not have insurance but could pay in full on the spot. Instead, this is what happened.
She was there about 2 hours, mostly waiting time. All the hospital did was:
1. 3 x-rays
2. Wrap her arm with gauze and a splint.
Not so much as an aspirin, no prescription, no follow up visit set. Wrapped her arm with gauze and had her leave. She was told they would mail her the bills.
A month later she called to ask how much is the bill since none was received? Shockingly, she was told that they secretly had filed for Medicare for her. This is outright felony fraud against the government by the hospital. My wife is not elderly, not in disability and can pay. Never said she couldn't.
The hospital billing department REFUSED to cancel the Medicare request - so confident they can steal as much money that want from the government as their right. Only after demanding to know the bill, she was told "over $9000."

3 x-rays, a roll of gauze and a splint via an intern - making a false Medicare claim for $9,000? Basically the wrapped her arm, told he to get lost - and then falsely filed a massively inflated false Medicare claim in her name. My wife has paid for other medical professionals to actually obtain medical care. Oak Hill did NONE. All Oak Hill cared about was making a false Medicare claim in her name - massively over-billing, while not treating her at all.
She did not know that Oak Hill Hospital was the same company as the Inverness, Florida hospital - which is absolutely horrific or she never would have gone there. In fact, she went there trying to AVOID the same company as has the Inverness, Florida hospital.
Simply, HCA West Florida hospitals such as Oak Hill are not about medical care. They don't exist for medical care. They don't care about patients. They prefer to shove them out the door rather than actually doing medical care. HCA West Florida hospitals exist to steal from the government - and to do so falsely thru patients, which also puts the patients at serious civil and criminal risk.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Don't even think of taking a sick dog to any HCA hospital - that I listed above.
As for what she is going to do?
1. Report the hospital to Medicare both to report the attempted felony theft by the hospital and to protect herself from the legal risks the hospital secretly created against her.
2. If a $9,000+ bill does come, because Medicare is NOT going to pay it - nor should - then take the HCA West Florida to a jury trial to dispute it. While ER visits are expensive, that is an outrageous sum, particularly since she was basically shoved out the door.
