I like to wine and dine with my family and clients whenever the opportunity presents itself. At the beginning of July my family had a taste for seafood and a fellow Co-worker suggested a place (I can't relay the actual restaurant chain, however it rhymes with "Fax" Fish House and Oyster Bar). They claim to have their fish, oysters, crab, and lobster flown in daily. At the time I didn't think much of it except that it must be very expensive to have east and west coast sea food flown into DIA every day or maybe they have some sort of contract where they share room on aircraft going from the west and east coasts every day. Any way the food was pretty good, but very expensive to which I attributed to the delivery of their seafood. I also brought my family to a place I live near and had been in business for over 20 years and it's name rhymes with "Ferry" Crest Seafood Restaurant and Market. They have always had delicious food and at a fair price, but what caught my attention was that they too have their seafood flown in daily. I asked one of the service personnel how they could have their seafood flown in everyday to which she did not know the answer, but a manager or concierge told me that they get their seafood from Northeast Seafood and not everyday, which is the same information I gleaned from "Fax" Fish House and Oyster Bar upon a phone call just inquiring on how they could have their seafood flown in from all four corners of the earth. The person I spoke with didn't know much about it but said they get their seafood from Northeast Seafood.
I called Northeast Seafood and wondered if I could pick up some items as I was throwing a small party for clients and friends where the motif was that of a New England Clam Bake. I wanted fresh lobsters but did not want to behead them or kill them myself to which they said that they would do it for a small fee, which I thought was great, but that greatness was soon turned into severe disappointment: when I picked up the order I noted that the lobsters were pretty cold, so cold I could hardly move any limbs without breaking them and ice on parts of them. Northeast said that they needed to keep them cold after they were slaughtered to prevent food borne illnesses. However they were more than just cold, they were frozen.
When I got home I measured the temperature and it showed that the temperature of the lobsters was well below zero (or the furthest my thermometer could measure), which didn't make much sense to me as I placed the order approximately 2 hours before picking it up and I showed up early as traffic allowed. I guess they could have flash frozen them, but that didn't make sense either since they knew the party was that evening. I would have expected refrigerated and not frozen solid. So the small party I was having was delayed for quite awhile waiting for the lobsters to thaw. After that weekend I spoke to a few coworkers about seafood being flown in daily and also fresh and the costs and logistics of that sort of venture. My logistics guy said that aside from the mail, that not even the military have things shipped to and fro that often, not even during military operations, however they can. My logistics guy went on to say that all of the seafood restaurants in the state could not afford such a venture. That got me thinking about how these restaurants could make such a claim (there are many other seafood restaurants in the state that make the same claim, but are not mentioned).
I became very interested at this point as it shows collusion and fraud on a very large scale: there are around 30 restaurants who get their seafood from Northeast Seafood. I placed a friendly call to Northeast Seafood and asked an employee for the name of the courier or airline service they use since I'm interested in something similar just not seafood so I would not be competing with them or the restaurants they serve. The answer I got was astounding, but made absolute sense: they do not get fresh seafood flown in daily, and the exotic seafood they do have flown in isn't daily either. They have a trucking company drive in their seafood twice per week and they pick up novelty food from the airport twice per week. The fish has been frozen for some time, a week or two depending on circumstance.
Northeast Seafood have many freezers and refrigerators. When a customer orders something, they thaw it out, cut it to specifications and off it goes to the restaurant that claims their seafood is flown in daily. Because of consumption and demand the Northeast seafood representative stated that their salmon and tuna are flown in on ice and not frozen so salmon and tuna are the freshest items to my understanding. Everything else is frozen and arrives twice per week to fill up their freezers. What a scam and one that encompasses many restaurants in Denver. I guess the restaurants think they are getting fresh food flown in daily or are lying to the consumer. In any case it is fraud that had gone on for many years, maybe ten or more years. Restaurant patrons have been paying for fresh food when in fact it is frozen.
I wonder what the cost difference is, fresh versus frozen! It makes me sick to write this, but the consumer must know. What's more is that Northeast Seafood and friends have profited by fraud. One (I would say gentleman, but that is far from the truth) said that he has 36 years of selling seafood, which made me want to barf because that means him and the other owners have defrauded Coloradans for 36 years. This reminds me of the book titled "Slaughter House."
