North America Moving Inc. Reviews

  • Dec 30, 2016

I was contacted by Chistopher Overby who indicated he was an agent of North American Van Lines about a request I made on the internet for moving costs from FL to AZ.

Mr. Overby quoted me an initial price of $3995 for pickup and delivery with a $300 deposit. I requested that they also pack and the second quote was a total of $4995 including packing, disassembly, pickup and delivery. I asked him if he was comfortable with that amount since I told him it was a 2800 SF 4 bedroom home with separate office, eat-in kitchen, and dining room and he said yes. I suggested that the movers pack on one day and move the next and he said that wasn't necessary. I then suggested that they do a home inspection prior to the move and he said "we don't do that.

On the day of move the movers showed up and I was immediatly told that this quote was not going to be acceptable.Although he never told me who he was in the company it appears that Yair Knafo, is the owner of the company. He had his workers sit around for over an hour while he did the inspection I had requested earlier. His quote came back at $15,670 with an immediate down payment of $9,100 by check. This is a 300+% increase over the former quote.

I was dumbfounded and told him I would contact the initial representative to find out why we had such a big change. He would never return my calls while the move was ongoing. I was caught in a bind and paid the downpayment. It took them approximately 16 hours to complete the move. Partly because one mover disappeared early and never returned and then the company owner decided he needed more wrapping paper (he didn't) and left for several hours. When he returned he began yelling at the remaining crew for being so slow.

The moving truck they used was already partially filled so they decided to bring another one. This one, as well as the first, were not owned by the company. They sub'd the work out. They indicated to me that they were going to direct deliver the homegoods in 4-5 days if I was available. I said I would leave immediately and meet them there. I was expecting delivery on the following Monday but they called and said they would be arriving on Sunday and I needed to have the balance of the payment ($6174.80) in cash. Given that I received this text msg Friday evening (Veterans Day) and I was not home until Saturday afternoon I called and asked if they could delay delivery a day or accept a check (like they did for the first installment) and they said no and if I was not there with the money they would off load and start charging storage fees. Several phone calls went back and forth now with Mr. Overbay and Mr. Knafo. These were threat phone callse that included dumping the load and "good luck with your shipment". Put in a position that they had my belongings and I was not in control I found the money to make the payment.

Needless to say when we opened a good number of the boxes as well as the padded material we hade multiple broken items (lamps, dresser feet, desk, etc.) in the shipment. The reassembly was poorly done and all beds had to be reset

Once we finished the move and got back on line we found that Mr. Yair Knafo was charged by the state of Georgia with 60 improper moves and fined $5000 per move ($300,000). He is known to have threatened clients and in one case withheld an heirloom until he extorted additional money from them.

t was the first time I had to do a long distance move and just like most people, I went online to grab some quotes ...they quickly replied with their quote for my small 1 bedroom apartment.

After receiving about 8-9 quotes theirs seemed to be the cheapest, so I went with them.

This is how they get you: They will send you a quote for X price, and ask you to have everything packed by X date. After you have everything packed and you're waiting for them to arrive, there isn't much you can do. I had already given notice to my landlord that I would have everything out of the apartment by a certain date.

When their driver arrived, he started recalculating everything ...and to my surprise, the cost immediately DOUBLED! I was just looking at him in awe, I told him "You're joking right?" he started giving me lame excuses because of distance to elevator, and the sofa this, sofa that.

anyways at that point, what could I have done ?

They will bait and switch out your contract and update the price to please them, so at first I was quoted at $3.60 per cubic ft. when they sent me the contract to sign, they had changed it to $5.0! I just wanted to get out of the house because they pushed back the pick up date with me and I was running out of time.

Now the even better part. My sofa (that they charged so much for) arrived SHATTERED completely in pieces and I have the pictures to prove it. I asked their driver why even bother dumping that junk in my new home, he said it was their policy to bring everything the way it came. My wooden tables were banged up, wine cart completely bent and rendered unusable, my bed frames came with broken screws in the legs... It's like they did it on purpose. I BEG YOU as a regular consumer. Choose another company, I have learned my lesson and I wouldn't wish this terrible experience with anyone. I'm a hard working man that does not make a lot of money, $ 2,000 is a lot of money and it really hurt to see that they damaged so many of my items.

The company is North America Moving. The website is northamericamoving.com. The man behind it is Yair Knafo.

He placed several ads on craigslist hiring hr/administrative assistant, class a drivers, formen. Things i found fishy: the Office has no logo, no information, there are no files, he did not have an employment application. Then he asked to not include my last name or personal information in my signature on emails or company information. I told him that it would look unprofessional to customers. He was not happy about it. Talked about not registering with BBB because they are "liars". Also mentioned about hiring a public relations company to fix his image. (Didn't get it at the time)

He interviewed me and then he wanted me to start immediately. He then has me take notes of our conversation and type up an agreement between us. I asked him for a w-4 not a 1099. Did not process w-4. First paycheck I had to meet him at the bank to get paid. The day he pays me he tells me that we should consider me getting paid salary. Next day he lets me go. A month passed and no paycheck. I have given him all he asked and still no paycheck.

The day he let me go I was told to look into him because he didn't seem as honest, I looked him up online and to my belief the things i found! He was investigated by 2 states. Back in 2011 considered worst company by angieslist. He has been investigated by the better business bureau. Banned from Georgia.

He does not seem as a reliable man. Run from this company do not allow him to scam you as an employer and if this is him as an employer i can only imagine his services.
